Satellite lost synch and cannot regain

I've have my Orbi 960 and two satellites up and running for almost a year with no issues. This morning, I noticed poor connectivity in the kitchen and after some troubleshooting on the routers home page and the Orbi app, discovered that one satellite dropped off line.  I cannot get it to reconnect.  Nothing has changed on my system recently and I have been using an ethernet backhaul to the satellite.

I have rebooted everything several times.  I have reset the satellite and tried again.  I have tried to synch via wifi and use a tested Cat6  backhaul connection.  Nothing has helped.

If I simply power up my satellite, the white LED light flashed white for several minutes indicating it is looking for a connection.  Eventually, it goes out, never cycling to blue, amber or purple.

I am out of ideas.

Re: Satellite lost synch and cannot regain

Thank you to you and the others who replied.  After trying the many solutions provided here, I finally decided to one more time factory reset the errant satellite late last night.  For reasons unknown to me, even though I did nothing new, the satellite booted up, found the router, and turned blue.  That had happened several times before, but this time, it finally displayed in the web browser and the Orbi app as a working satellite.

All seems well.  I really appreciate the time you and others spent with me.

Re: Satellite lost synch and cannot regain

Has a power off for 1 minute then back ON with the ISP modem and router been performed since last update?
Be sure to restart your network in this sequence:
Turn off and unplug modem.
Turn off router and computers.
Plug in and turn on modem. Wait 2 minutes for it to connect.
Turn on the router and wait 2 minutes for it to connect.
Turn on computers and rest of network.

What Firmware version is currently loaded?

What is the size of your home? Sq Ft?
What is the distance between the router and 📡 satellite(s)? 30 feet or more is recommended in between RBR and RBS🛰️ to begin with depending upon building materials when wirelessly connected.

Re: Satellite lost synch and cannot regain

Since satellites are portable, what happens if the satellite is temporarily moved to the same location as the router and powered on there?

Re: Satellite lost synch and cannot regain

I've done those steps but will try again.

My firmware shows current as V6.3.7.5 on the router and the one satellite that still works.  Can't see the other one obviously.

I have a 3100 sf home with an unfinished basement where the router is connected to the modem.  I am Cat 6 hardwired for the backhaul, so the distance should not really matter (and hasn't for the past year), but it's probably 40-50' straight line through a floor.

Wondering if the one RBS didn't update properly?

Are both RBS connected wired to the RBR?

Re: Satellite lost synch and cannot regain

I'm wondering that myself.  Is there a way to check/fix that?  Do you know when the most recent firmware came out?  Mine is set to autoupdate, and this problem just started this morning.

Re: Satellite lost synch and cannot regain

Eeeks.

I might turn OFF the other RBS, bring the non working RBS to the same room.
See if connecting the RBS to the back of the RBR will bring up a IP address at all for the RBS, if you can, use this IP address to see if you can access the RBS web page...

Might try removing the one RBS from the RBRs web page then try a wireless sync or ethernet connect...

Re: Satellite lost synch and cannot regain

I thought I was making progress.  The "bad" RBS power supply is behind heavy furniture, so I decided to borrow the supply from the good RBS.  I deleted the bad RBS from the web interface, went downstairs, plugged in the RBS to the RBR with a cat6 cable, then powered it up.

I got the flashing white light for maybe 5 minutes or so so was hopeful maybe the firmware might be synching up if that was the issue.  Eventually, I got the solid blue light.  Waited for it to go out and then refreshed the router page.   It is only showing the disconnected RBS that I borrowed the power supply from.

Re: Satellite lost synch and cannot regain

My experience has been that the Orbi Attached Devices page takes a while to update.  (One would think computer gear would be instantaneous, but that has not been the case for me.)

If one satellite has no power, yet appears in the display and the satellite that showed a blue light does not, the display cannot be correct.

Re: Satellite lost synch and cannot regain

OK, good observation.  Just after I posted the above, I noticed that the previously errant device IS showing up in Connected DEVICES, but it is NOT showing up under Connected Satellites.  The disconnected satellite is showing up there but without an IP connection, because it is currently unpowered.

So I don't know if that is progress or not.

Re: Satellite lost synch and cannot regain

I would call that progress.  On this model, I am not certain "what happens" when the satellite is Factory Reset.  It might be worth doing another Factory Reset on the "bad" satellite, then going through the Add Orbi Satellite process on the main menu.

Re: Satellite lost synch and cannot regain

No with the problem RBS that you seem to have working with the borrowed power supply, can you log into the RBS web page and check the FW version?

Ya, a good old FR maybe needed on the RBS, remove it's entry from the RBR then use the sync buttons on the RBR and RBS to wireessly sync it to the RBR, then if it gets fully synced, connect it via ethernet and ensure that works again and is seen in the RBRs web page.

Re: Satellite lost synch and cannot regain

It just gets more weird.  I don't see the bad RBS in my Connected devices anymore after trying to get it to show as a connected satellite., but it's still at the IP address I saw it earlier.

I logged into both RBS devices and the FW is identical to the router, but there are differences between the to RBS login screens as you can see in both the graphic representation and in the 2.4GHz WiFi status column below.

Here's a screenshot of the Bad RBS's webpage and since I can only include one attachment, I'll put the screenshot of the good RBS's webpage in a comment below.

Thanks to all for the replies

Re: Satellite lost synch and cannot regain

Ive had the exact same issue, happened a few hours ago! Ive got mine set up exactly like yours! only issue I have is both my satellites are now offline and I cant get them back synced! Have you had any progress? I was loking to roll back the firmware version, but the support documentation recommends rolling back the satellites first, only issue is I cant access them anymore.

Not yet, but I appreciate the help others are providing.  Very frustrating for such an expensive system.

Did you try a reset on the satellites?

Re: Satellite lost synch and cannot regain

I've left the working one alone but did factory reset the other.  When I use the Orbi App to add, it says the satellite was not found even though I get to the blue light stage.

Re: Satellite lost synch and cannot regain

Same happens with both of mine, get the blue light as if it has synced and nothing at all showing. its so strange! Im wondering if a new firmware update will fix it? only issue I've got is none of the satellites are connected and i cant get a wifi signal! Crazy thing is everything I have hard wired is working fine.

Re: Satellite lost synch and cannot regain

My FW says 6.3.7.5 and that no updates are available, but the support page lists 6.3.7.10 as current version.  I'm reluctant force an upgrade without the satellites working correctly.

Ironically, for the version I have, listed enhancements were:

  • Improve the stability between base and satellite connections.
  • Improves satellite firmware upgrade stability.
  • Improves satellite UI stability.

    Yeah, sure

Re: Satellite lost synch and cannot regain

I highly recommend that you manually download the newer version of FW and use a wired PC and web browser to manaully update both RBS first, then update the RBR lastly.
After all FW has been sent to the RBS and RBR and they have processed the FW and are back ot ready, power off the RBS and RBR for 1 minute, then back ON with the RBR then RBS. You should be good to go at this point.

Re: Satellite lost synch and cannot regain

EDIT: OK It's back and showing as a Connected Satellite, but as I type, the good satellite has become a bad satellite and has no IP address (better than than weird 192.168.1.250 one I guess).  I'm going to give it a few minutes to see what happens here.

*******

OK, I did what you suggested in the exact order.  I still only see one satellite, but oddly it now has an IP address of 192.168.1.250 whereas the router is at 192.168.10.1 and shows Backhaul Status : Out of Synch.  That makes No sense to me whatsoever.

Oddly, I found it at 192.168.10.2 and could log on.

All my other connected devices are in the 192.168.10.XX domain.

I see the bad satellite at .14 and can logon there too. Both satellites flashed white for several minutes and then turned blue following the FW upgrade. but only the good one is listed as a Connected Satellite.

On the Sat login page, the bad sat displays a "-" in Wireless mode (vs Up To 573Mbps on the good one) and Wireless AP "Off" (vs On on the good one.)

Would a factory reset of everything be next? (Ugh)

Re: Satellite lost synch and cannot regain

I wanted to edit my last but I think I waited too long.  Very weird.  Not the previously bad satellite is working and the previous good satellite is not. (See attachment).

The only thing I have NOT done yet after the FW update is factory reset everything.

Re: Satellite lost synch and cannot regain

Did you bring the RBS to near or in same room as the RBR? Might turn OFF the working RBS and bring the other one to near the RBR.

I also wanted to point out that for the size of home you have, you only need 1 RBS deployed. If you want two deployed, I recommend turning down the transmit power on the RBR to 25%. I have a 5k sq ft home and 3 levels and can get away with just 1 RBS. When i have two RBS deployed, transmit power is at 25%.

Re: Satellite lost synch and cannot regain

The one that IS working was next to the router.  The other one was on the next floor directly up.  I'll move it down and reboot.
