Netgear Orbi RBR50 Satellite via ethernet backhaul - satellite loses connection
Hello,
I've been using the following setup for over a year with RBR50:
1. Internet modem in bridge mode connected via ethernet to
2. Orbi Router connected via ethernet backhaul to
3. Orbi Satellite in my office room
In the satellite, in addition to the ethernet backhaul connection I have other devices connected via ethernet, including a Mac computer via a USB-ethernet adapter.
It's been working quite stable with no issues for several months, but recently I ugpraded both devices to the latest firmware (v.2.7.2.104). Since then I am seeing following the following issue:
- Satellite is connected to router via ethernet backhaul indicated by connection Wired in the Orbi app
- Computer 1 is connected to satellite via USB ethernet adapter, wifi is off
- Computer 2 is connected to satellite via wifi
- When I disconnect computer 2 form the USB ethernet adapter, it causes the satellite to lose the backhaul connection and thus any device connected to the satellite will have no internet connection.
It seems hat powering off the satellite, powering it on again and waiting for 10 minutes or so brings it back to normal state. Note this only happens when the computer is unplugged from the ethernet connection.
The ethernet cable connected to both devices is on the first port (next to yellow port on the router, closes to sync button on the satellite).
Is this a known issue? Perhaps a bug in this firmware version?

I din't have a lot of info on the backhaul situation, however there is several reported issues with v.2.7.2.104
you may want to do a search and read for yourself. Others may have more info and ask you to perform troubleshooting, which may result in rolling back your firmware.
I tried downgrading to 2.6.1.40 but the problem persists.

How is the RBS connected to the RBR? Directly to the back of the RBR or is there a LAN switch in between?
FYI: For users ethernet connecting there RBS to the RBR while on v102 or v104, they may experience an short ARP storm for about a minute or two then it will stop and never appear again:

ARP storm??
RBS is connected direclty to RBR via ethernet (no switch).

Is there perhaps a typo? Computer 1 uses the USB adapter, but then Computer 2 is disconnected?
What USB adapter is this? (brand & model)
Computer 1 is the only device connected to the USB adapter?
There is probably a reason that Computer 1 is disconnected from the USB adapter rather than the USB adapter disconnected from the Orbi? (Computer 1 is a laptop and isn't portable unless it is disconnected from the USB adapter, so why unplug two connections?)
Yes, you are correct. It's a typo. Good catch!
When I disconnect computer 1 from the USB ethernet adapter, it causes the satellite to lose the backhaul connection and thus any device connected to the satellite will have no internet connection. When this happens, the satellite is shown as offline in the Netgear Orbi admin panel/app. I can confirm device connected to the main router still have internet while anything connected to the satellite won't.
Basic connection setup
Internet router RBR50 RBS50 USB adapter USB hub Mac
x------eth-bridge----x
x----eth-backhaul-------x
x---------eth----x-----USB------x---USB----x
When the connection between USB hub and Mac is interrupted the satellite goes offline and does not reconnet on its own, even after watiting for 15+ minutes. A reboot (turn off, turn on) is needed in order for the satellite to sync again to the main router.
There is no switch on the ethernet backhaul connection, router and satellite are wired directly. The USB ethernet adapter is SVEON SCT222, with chipset rtl5183.
I have tried downgrading the firmware from 2.7. to 2.6.1.40, but the problem persists.
UPDATE:
>When I disconnect computer 2 form the USB ethernet adapter
This is a typo. It should be computer 1.
The issue also happens on firmware 2.6.1.40.>did you perform a factory reset?
No, I haven't. I will try that this weekend ( I am afraid of doing this on weekday impacting work).
