Sky Q and Orbi RBR50 - Can you help ?
I cannot connect my Sky Q main box to my Orbi RBR 50. I get my internet from BT who have provided the modem. I have turned off the wifi on the BT router and hard wired the Orbi into the BT modem. The Orbi RBR has 3 satelites, all hard wired via a Netgear Smart Switch (Unmanaged).
The ORBI is on Router mode and works everything in the house great but i cannot connect the SkyQ to it. If i plug the SkyQ directly into the BT router it works fine but i want it on the Orbi router so that i can use the SkyQ app etc. It says cannot find IP address ? Is ORBI or the Netgear switch blocking it ?
Can you help ? Please note i am not technical so any simple instructions greatly recieved.
Thankyou

Re: Sky Q and Orbi RBR50 - Can you help ?
Please do the following simple test to make sure that the BT modem is not acting as a second router:
Please open a Command Prompt on any computer attached to Orbi and type:
> tracert 8.8.8.8 (or traceroute 8.8.8.8 if you're using a MacOS computer)
- If you see two private IP addresses listed in the first two hops then you have double NAT. Please check the model of your ISP modem and if you have a manual for it to set it in Bridged mode.
- If you see only one private address and the second hop shows a public address, then you’re all good and we need then to troubleshoot further.
If you're not sure of the above then just paste the output of the printout here and we will help you.

Re: Sky Q and Orbi RBR50 - Can you help ?
Thanks,
This shows that you have tw routers in your network: Orbi is one and the BT modem is the second, and this is probably why you're seeing this issue with the SkyQ and probably will start to see more issues later with other devices.
You have 2 options to go forward:
- Keep the BT modem as your main router and set Orbi in AP Mode. This can be done in the web GUI (orbilogin.com) under >> ADVANCED >> Advanced Settings >> Router / AP Mode
- Keep Orbi in Router Mode and check the BT modem manual to change it to Bridge Mode (Passthrough) or DMZ. You can may be also check with the ISP (BT) how this can be done.

Re: Sky Q and Orbi RBR50 - Can you help ?
If I change the Orbi set up will i still benefit from all the Orbi satellites (3) and all the coverage. I have a large house with very thick old walls so i picked the Orbi as it promised to cover the space. If i want to change the Orbi router will it just distribute/broadcast as the BT ? i.e i should look for the BT name on the available networks ?

Re: Sky Q and Orbi RBR50 - Can you help ?
If you want to change Orbi to AP Mode, then just keep the BT in the current state (keep the radio off in the BT modem) and switch Orbi to AP Mode.
By doing that you will continue to benifit from the radio coverage of Orbi with all your Satellites. The change that will happen is that all IP routing decisions will come from the BT modem/router and not from Orbi.

Re: Sky Q and Orbi RBR50 - Can you help ?
So if i understand correctl. 1. Turn off wireless on BT Router, 2. Switch Orbi to AP mode.
2 follow on questions:
1. Do I continue to look for the Orbi Network for my mobile phone / laptop etc ? or do i now look for the BT network ?
2. For my SkyQ, do i plug it directy into 1. the BT router, 2. The orbi base station or 3. The netgear switch ?
I want to ensure that my mobile phone and the SkyQ are on the same network ?
Finally and returning to the original, do you think this will now allow the SkyQ to connect to the internet ?
Apologies for the questions but this is super helpful

Correct

Yes, look for the Orbi Network as you always did. The BT network wifi network is off now

Either of these options should work, since Orbi is in AP Mode

Yes, if your SkyQ works when connected directly to the BT modem it should work now. 🙂
Good luck!
