Which Orbi System? Totally confused!

Hi Folks,

Bare with me as my networking skills are pretty bad. I have a 2k sq ft home. Well more like 3k when you include the basement where I live. Home office is downstairs with 3 total floors. Likely have a few hard wired stuff to the router components but upstairs may be some TV's and Xboxs.

I see like 10 different Orbi systems.

What really confuses me is:

  • What is the benefit of having ethernet ports? Are they required for this backhaul stuff?
  • What the hell is backhaul?

Which Orbi system should I buy?

For a 2-3k sqft home, the RBK40 would probably work well, base router and 1 satellite. I have a 5000sq ft home and my base router and 1 satellite works very well. Placement is key. 30 feet in between the base and satellite to begin with.

I would review the models listed for specs and such:

Wire back haul is just instead of connecting the satellites via wireless and extending the base routers wifi with the satellites, the satellites can be connected wired LAN cable with the base and then they can be some remote wireless APs. Wired back haul has better performance and can be used where signal maybe poor in remote locations for wireless connections.

Thank you for your reply.

So what would the difference be if I purchased an RBK30 with an extra satelite?

It seems like I would get better wifi with 2 additional Satellite being strategically placed as opposed to the one Satellite with the RBK40

If you can place all three well with out too much over lap, it would work. 30 feet to start with in between the router and each stallite.

Also consider the obstructions the signal passes through. I have a 1950s-era 1200sf brick house. Plaster walls. I have an RBR50 with an RBS50 satellite. I thought it would be overkill, but no. I'm really glad I went with this over the 20-30--40 systems.
