RBS50 issues with Firware V2.7.3.22 - Firmware incorrect

I have had an RBR50 +1 RBS50 satelite that had been working nearly flawlessly for some time,,,,until Firware V2.7.2.104.  Devices being blocked from the internet when connected to the satelite, like everyone else.  I've been having to (at least) daily fix devices for people with the workarounds, but with 10 people in the house, and 2-4 devices per person, this has been a real headache.

I was delighted to see a new firmware V2.7.3.22, and tried to install.  It installed fine on my RBR50 with no issues, but when I open the zip for RBS50-V2.7.3.22.zip, I find RBR50-V2.7.3.22.img, and it will not update the RBS50 saying "Firmware version is incorrect".

Were it no so typical, this would be a comic "oops".  Seems like a pretty big jump in version numbers when the only fix is the DNS/Traffic Meter/Daylight Saving Time fiasco from last March.

  • After this upgrade, on top of the bugs already mention, also noted the following:

    - Under Advanced -> Advanced Setup ->  Web Services Management.

All the Remote Management options have disappeared. Has this been removed intentionaly I wonder.

    - Also noted in orbi app (for IOS), under Settings -> Anywhere Access" "Out-Of-Home Controls" turned itself back on, I had this turned off before upgrade. That to me is a major concern, do we have to check every setting each time we do an upgrade now!!!

    - Along with the other known bugs that have not been addressed, as mentioned in this thread.

Is Netgear going to take software upgrades more seriously in future? The constant simple QA oversights, ie mismatch firmware, changing configuration, not addressing major bugs etc are starting to get tiresome.

Seriously, unless there are some assurances there will be better QA before releasing software updates, and addressing bugs in a timely manner, I'm just going to buy another router from somewhere else.

That is, indeed, odd. I just checked my Orbi app (iOS) and that setting is still turned off; nothing else appears to have changed with the update.

I just now installed v2.7.3.22 on my spare Orbi RBR50. Web Services  Management appears as it always  has. (see attached image). With only one device connected to this Orbi (my Double NAT test bed), I have not noticed any other changes.

Continue to be amazed that people can install the exact same firmware on Orbi routers and wind up with different settings.

Some users may need a factory reset and setup from scratch if they encounter odd problems like browser items missing or not appearing.

Be sure to clear out all browser caches before entering the RBRs web page.

Try a different browser as well.

Most cases this isn't a FW issue.

  • Wonder if or when they will ever fix the access control problem with it spontaneously blocking devices which has carried through numerous firmware revisions now.

      Hi Lyth,

Are there any specific devices that is affected by the access control problem you mentioned?

Sorry, you may have mentioned it in another thread that I haven't read.

We use access control set to block all new devices to keep the kids from changing their MAC addresses to bypass the Circle parental controls.  There have been a number of firmwares over the past year, year and a half, that it will work as expected for a while then start switching a device here and there from allowed to blocked.  You can unblock them but the problem then starts getting worse to the point ALL devices no matter what they are become blocked.  You can switch them back to allowed in the app but it will change back to blocked quickly.  It's completely unusable.  I've posted in a few threads over time where other people have experienced the same thing.  I'm hesitant to try any firmware at this point because it is working without access control on and I had an automatic firmware update pushed last fall or winter that bricked my router.  There was no recovering it whatsoever with any method and I had to purchase a used one off Amazon.

  • OMG... this firmware FORCED update is screwing me up!

07/30/21: I woke up and it auto-update, removing the SSID separation.  I had to downgrade, enable Telnet and setup everything again. I tried to prevent further update following this

07/31/21: I woke up and Netgear FORCED ANOTHER update to v2.7.3.22. This time, it will NOT accept the router password. It won't even accept the security question.

Somehow, the firmware auto update screw something up that the password changed or something else. Now I got LOCKED OUT from my own router and have to do a hard reset. Now I have to spent my morning to fix this.... AGAIN?!

Netgear really dropped the ball by doing this auto-update.

Please understand that if you had modified the SSID before while using Stock FW that any and all future updates will break the modification coming from NG as NG does NOT support separation of SSID.

You may need to implement a up stream host router to block NG update services on Orbi systems if you want to keep what had been working for you. You can't block update services on Orbi itself. Youd be running a double NAT condition, however you could revert back to what version had been working for you and would prevent anymore auto updates. For those of you OUT of warranty, you can also use Voxels 3rd party FW which seems to keep all historical features users like having. User need to refer here for that information:

      https://www.snbforums.com/forums/netgear-ac-wireless.53/

Like it or not, it's NG FW and product design. Up to you if you wanna keep using it with stock FW.

      Good Luck

I understand, but the issue is that NG LOCKED ME OUT when it did auto-firmware update. My password no longer works... not even the security questions or the default password

This is an example why auto-firmware update can be bad - for whatever reason, it messed up the authentication or something that I no longer can access the admin page.
