Pre-Release of Windows 10 and ReadyNAS.
Has anybody setup a system with a pre-release Windows 10 and networked a ReadyNAS? I am interested as I intend to upgrade soon (not certain if I will do it on day 1 - 29/07/15), and wondered what im...
- Jun 21, 2015We are using the latest samba series 4.2 in our ReadyNAS OS 6.2.x firmware.
Beta software inherently may have bugs and some changes before release. Also a major upgrade like Windows 10 is likely to have added new SMB features which may take some time to be supported by samba if at all.
One would think it should work similarly well to how the ReadyNAS works with existing versions of Windows e.g. Windows 7 but it is possible there may be some issues for early adopters.
I would advise business users not to upgrade immediately. Some software e.g. 3rd party software will require updates to support Windows 10. Where possible test Windows 10 first on a non-production machine to hopefully avoid issues leading to serious downtime.

StehphenB,
Thanks for the helpful info. I think I have located the problem.
One, when I open File Explorer or Powerdesk it takes several seconds to locate and display the shares of the NAS. I just have to learn to wait each time I access the shares on the NAS.
Two, Quicken is modifying flies, but that is a different share. I started trying to rename a file in my ten or so shares on the NAS314. Turns out I can access and modify all of them, but the one I accessed most all of the time. When I drilled down, the settings for that share were different than all of the other shares. All the other shares has the same permissions.
I tried to map the share using File Explorer, which I could do, but editing a file was still an issue. Reinforces the problem is permissons, I think.
I am the process of trying to replicate the settings for that share I can't edit to be the same as for the others. I have no idea why that share is different. It is not something that I knowingly did.
Apparently this has been going on intermittantly for several months via Win 8.1 and Win 10. I think Win 8.1 and 10 Window Credentials played a part.
Interestingly, when I access the share from my Mac running Win 8.1 using Parallels, I don't have a problem.
Now I have to work on the permissions to verify my diagnosis. The first one I updated didn't correct the problem.

Well, it turns out I was only partially right. Tried to open an Excel spreadsheet, which I could do, but only save it to Win 10 Documents folder, not from the NAS share where it was opened. The file opens as a read only file. Did a search on my updated files and tried to save them to the share via File Explorer. Nothing doing. I don't have access to do that.
Have been all over the internet and tried updating permission based on info I found. I go throught the steps and it appears they worked, but then I can't write to the shares.
Based on the info on the internet, apparently I am one of legions who can't access and modify their own files.

I'm not seeing that problem with windows 10.
How are owner/group, network and file permissions set for the share (in the NAS web ui)?
- JEHendonAug 17, 2015Aspirant
Are use using One Drive? Others post that is a problem.
I have six names with access to the shares, Full Control, This folder, subfolders, and files. Four of them are NAS realted, i.e, guest, admin, ReadyNAS admin. I don't think it is an NAS issue, but a Windows 10 issues.
Thanks for helping.

And the windows credential you are using with the NAS is one of the six?
Does it change if you reset the share to the default security (you can always set it back later)?

Hello everyone if i may add to the conversation....
I have a dell laptop running windows 7 pro. Got the windows 10 up grade on saturday.
Installed
I run a Ready NAS Duo with all my media files on and my personal files back up. Connected wirelessly to the laptop and LAN networked to the TV.
Since install the following has happened:
I can see the NAs and the sub folders on my laptop.
I can play the files on my Viera TV
I can see the files but cant play the files on my laptop, not even a photo image. if i connect the LAN cable no problems.
I use "Freesync" to sync my files between my laptop and the NAS. Never had a problem with it in my usual wireless setup. Connected via LAN no problems. Wireless, again it hangs, then detects the differences. When i commence the sync, it hangs and then crashes.
My router is good as i can stream Iplayer and netflix from the web. My sharing settings are all there, nothing appears to have changed.
I can only deduct that windows 10 has affected the connectivity between my laptop and the NAS......where this causes the information to pulse rather than stream......if that makes sense?!?!? Please bear in mind i am a lay man not computer guru.
If i try to copy from explorer by clicking and dragging, the wireless connection did allow this to happen but if i then double click on the nas file to open it, the computer seems to stall. If in explorer i click on a nas photo file with the preview pane open, a small image file will take 30seconds or more to preview. If i try to double click and open it, the computer stalls........any ideas. Thank you...very frustrated.....it has all worked so well for so long and now no quite as i like it to!

Is the Windows 10 system's wifi connection set to "private"?
Do you have internet security software running on the PC?
- JEHendonAug 18, 2015Aspirant
How do I tell if the Window's 10 system's wifi connection is set to "private." If it is, it would be something by default as I am pretty sure I haven't done that.
No internet security software other than Windows Defender.
I have unlinked from One Drive and based on a quick check I can now open and save docments in 'C' drive documents. Apparently, MS set the defaults to be read only. Why, I don't have a clue.
Also, couldn't change permissions on my NAS Shares. My next step is try doing that.
The one NAS Share I have the most trouble with had permission for 'guest' and 'admin.' I changed it to 'admin' to be the same as the other shares.
The quest continues. Thanks for your persistence to help me solve this.
aNext step is to try

When you first connect to a network, Windows prompts as to whether it should be public or private.
If you go into settings, then network and sharing center, you should see the current classification at the top.
If it is public, you can change it using this guide: http://winaero.com/blog/change-network-location-type-public-or-private-in-windows-10/
- JEHendonAug 18, 2015Aspirant
It is private.
What is the significance of the difference?
- StephenBAug 18, 2015Guru - Experienced User
Public network connections have different security settings, especially on file sharing.
Private is what it should be for your home network.
Is the workgroup of the NAS set the same as the workgroup of the PC? Note that workgroup is not the same as "homegroup".
- JEHendonAug 18, 2015Aspirant
StephenB, Thanks
Unless something has changed, all my workgroups are the same, so I don't think that is the issue.
As of now, changing permissions in Win 10 is the issue.
I get the 'Failed to enumerate objects in the container. Access is denied.' If I choose OK, I get the "Unable to save permissions changes on 'folder name.' 'Access is denied.'
The above is where I have not figured out what to do next. Have done some internet research, but don't have the insight to resolve the issue yet.

I have the wifi set to private and all shares are set to private as well.
The only defense i have is AVG free for virus, windows defender and windows firewall.
regards

From what I'm reading that is a file ownership issue. On the NAS web UI there is a reset control for each share (select the share, then settings, then look on the file access tab). That might be worth a try.
Are you comfortable with ssh? Looking directly at the linux owner/permissions and changing them is not that difficult (though of course you do have to be careful in what you type)?
- JEHendonAug 19, 2015Aspirant
Thanks, I will try the ownership issue. Will have to be much later today.
Not familiar with ssh. What is it?
Thanks for the help.

A command-line interface to the NAS. If you've never used command line interfaces, it might not be for you.
- JEHendonAug 20, 2015Aspirant
More complicated than file ownership. All shares are admin for Folder Owner and Folder Group.
R/W for Everyone, Folder Owner and Folder Group.
I changed one share to me as a user, but nothing changed. Still can't write to the files.
Don't understand why File Explorer can't edit files, but Quicken can, which is good news.
I have used command line interfaces. Just need to know how to do it with ssh.
Have other demands for the next several days; will have to let this issue rest and then get back to it later.

There are several guides to linux commands, and some of them ("cd' for instance) are similar to dos.
entering cd /data/sharename will get you into the share folder. ls -alR will give you information on file owner/group and permissions for each file in the share (including subfolders). These are also used by CIFS. Note these determine the file permissions, not the network access (the two work in combination)..
The commands chmod, chgrp, and chown can be used to modify these parameters directly. You do need to be careful, you can do damage when you are using ssh.
