Step by Step instruction/help
I just purchased me a used ReadyNas Pro 4 with 4 - 4TB hard drives allready installed. I have been trying for the past 2 days to try and get it to be seen on the Readcloud but it keeps saying I have ...

I have tried using my password not working tried "password" same thing. It never comes back and says bad user name or password, What Happens is I go to the Ip/admin then a white pop up box shows up with the IP address on it and under that has to fill in blanks first one says username I put in "admin" then password I put in " ********** " (one I made up)the box just goes away for a few seconds then comes back ready to fill in never says that anything was wrong. I even tried using "password" as the Password same thing. If I do a reset will it reset the Password back to factory (Username = admin Password = password) and will it lose the data I have already put on?? not much I could redo just curious ..
I did set up a password recovery with my email address but do not now how to make it do recovery

Did you try the other suggestions (using incognito/private browsing, and checking the browser saved passwords)?
Also, are you browsing to https://nas-ip-address/admin (using the real NAS IP address)?
An OS reinstall will reset the password back to password. It will change two other settings - the network settings will be reset to use DHCP and the quota will be turned off (on the volume settings wheel). A factory default will reformat the disks, and you'd need to set up the NAS from scratch.

I tried incognito/private browsing same thing and looked for the browser saved passwords and it is not listed. I click on the blue "Admin Link" from the Netgear Webcite. I have not put too much on the NAS you think a reset or something else I can try
- StephenBJul 13, 2021Guru - Experienced User
Try browsing directly to the NAS IP address (as suggested above), and not using ReadyCloud.
- Yoda3647Jul 13, 2021Aspirant
I have done that same results. I even tried hooking up a second ethernet cable and tried logging into that ip address same thing the difference in adrress is the last instead of .16 is .22. I will try a couple of more times while waiting on your reply about if I ned to go ahad and reset before I add any more data
- StephenBJul 13, 2021Guru - Experienced User
I'd disconnect the second cable, and try restarting the NAS. Then see if you can connect directly https://nas-ip-address/admin (not using ReadyCloud).
If that still gives you the timeout, then I'd do an OS reinstall on the NAS.

So long as you leave the browser window open that shows the account is locked, it may stay locked (or, really, keep re-locking).
Your picture seems to show you are using HTTP. Note what StephenB said:
Browse to https://nas-ip-address/admin.
Your browser security setting or a firewall may also be blocking you. The NAS uses a self-signed certificate (which is the only option for something on a local network), and some browsers/settings or firewalls will simply block access instead of giving you an option to go there anyway.
Close the browser, disconnect the current Ethernet port, connect to the other, make sure you've waited long enough for the password lock to be lifted (5 min, I think), then use RAIDar to log in or go to the new IP address (the other port will use a different IP address) as shown on the display. That should give you an option to log in unless you are being blocked by your browser or firewall.
As for the password, if you set it while still on OS 4.2.x, it will not be that -- it will have reset to the default of password.

It shouldn't take that long. Perhaps let it run a while longer, then see if it completes. If you forcibly powered down (likely since you can't log in), the volume or OS partition might need to be rebuilt.
- Yoda3647Jul 13, 2021Aspirant
Still says booting.... I open up RAIDar and it says System Staring up.. Is this one bricked or what else can I do??
- StephenBJul 13, 2021Guru - Experienced User
Try shutting it down and starting it up again.
- Yoda3647Jul 13, 2021Aspirant
Did that still doing the same the LED screen say "Booting..." and the On buttom blinking blue the HD lights are all on steadyand has been that way for over 1 hour. What to try next???

Not a bad price if the drives are going to provide you enough storage and they are in good shape. Pre-COVID, I would have said it's high, but prices have gone up. If the drives don't suit your use and you're going to replace them, then it's a tad high. I see it's been sold -- did you buy it?
The unit's probably not bricked, but the OS partition may have problems. Once the OS is installed from the flash, it boots from the drives, not the flash. A factory default is the best next step, since you have no data on it you need to keep. To keep it simple and fast, you could do that with just one drive initially to see that the conversion went well.

Okay will try factory reboot with just one drive. does it matter wich drive and I am assuming it drive spot number 1. to do the Factory reset I turn the unit off the with tooth pick push the factory rest button??

You could try just rebooting with only one drive in place. First try drive 1, then try drive 2.
A factory reset would use the process in the hardware manual - page 21-22 here: https://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/RNDU2000/ReadyNAS_Ultra_UltraPlus_NVX_Pro_HW_en_8July11.pdf
You could also try the OS reinstall first.

FWIW, per the photos, the drives are 10 years old - so they might not last much longer. There was a diskless RN424 listed that was slightly cheaper, that might be worth considering also.

Okay, I havw been at hospital for the past 2 days and left the NAS running with one drive in it. Got home and it is up and running I was able to login to Admin page and all. Question now is I stuck the other 3 drives in and the NAS is still only showing 3.63 TB available, but when I go to Volumes it show the available one in Blue and the other 3 in Black. I tried restarting but still the same how to I get the NAS to expand and use all 4 drives??
- Yoda3647Jul 16, 2021Aspirant
Okay I selected eachone and click Format, It's something about erasing all information and the disc would then be used to expand then told me to type in "FORMAT SELECTED" I did and waited then it finished but the Nas still only shows the one hard drive Blue the other 3 are Black and on the overview tab still only shows 3.63TB. On the Volume tab under the picture of the NAS it shows "blue square (RAID 1 then a green square ) If I use RAIDar it shows all 4 weith check marks and Healthly

Is the NAS set up to use XRAID? Look at the XRAID control on the volume tab - if it has a green stripe across it, then you are using XRAID.
- Yoda3647Jul 16, 2021Aspirant
yes, the XRAID has a green strip/line through it

Try removing and then reinserting one of the disks (with the NAS powered up), and see if that triggers the expansion. You could also try rebooting.
Another option is to connect the drives to a PC, and either unformat them or zero them. Then hot-insert them into the NAS.
- Yoda3647Jul 16, 2021Aspirant
I put 1 back in and it is still black but has a green light/square.Like the Blue one has the same green light/square I will let this sit (got go back to Hospital be gone for about 5 hrs) and see what happens it nothing how do I "unformat or Zero them out" hot swop I am assuming means to just add the disc to the NAS as it is running????
Thanks for all your help

Yes. (though in this case it means remove and then reinsert with the NAS running).
Yoda3647 wrote:

In a windows PC, you unformat a disk by launching the Microsoft Disk Manager. You then select each partition (Microsoft calls them volumes), and remove it.
The easiest way to zero a disk is to use the manufacturer diags (Seatools for Seagate, Western Digital Dashboard for Western Digital). They both have a erase / write zeros test. In the case of Seatools, it is an advanced test, so there is an extra step needed for the test to be shown.
If the diag offers a "quick" write zeros/erase test, then it is fine to use that. It erases enough to clear out the partition info.
- SandsharkJul 17, 2021Sensei
You probably don't want to do that. It will re-sync each one at a time. That test also probably indicates at least one of the drives has a problem. The next thing to do is power down, move the drive to the next slot, and power up; then repeat till, you go through them all. If it boots in all positions, then the NAS hardware isn't the problem.
The next best step would be to check the drives (including the one you used for the single drive test) with vendor tools using a PC. Since a sync isn't required for a single-drive installation, there could still be bad sections of the disk that worked alone that just didn't get used.
But if you really want to just go for it all, you have to select each drive and format it to erase any residual formatting from the failed installation.
- Yoda3647Jul 18, 2021Aspirant
What I ended up doing was using the 3 drives not being used . Installing them taking out the 1st one then resting the NAS now it is seeing the 3 drive and right now it's saying Volume syncing(78.1% complete). My plan is after Scncing is complete I want to hadd back the 1st drive,..Can I just stick it in?????
