Ultra 4 messed up after apt-get dist-upgrade

Hi,

it seems I have messed up my Ultra 4 by mistake, would like to know if i can get it working again without full reinit.

Basically I was on 4.2.27, but I have made many manual changes to the system in the past where I already did things I was not supposed to do. This include (and most likely was not limited to) the following:

added multiple apt repositories from debian archives (etch) and elsewhere
    Installed Java 7, Java 8
installed more recent versions of packages, eg perl or python
    installed openhab (http://www.openhab.org)
installed USB drivers for Bluetooth and a plugwise Zigbee controller
installed MySQL server and created various databases
    installed Plex
    installed motion

All this was running fine, including regular backups to my old NV+.

Recently I tried to install motioneye (https://bitbucket.org/ccrisan/motioneye) and USB camera drivers but struggled with some of the dependencies and versions. As I had this many times during the past years I decided (against knowing better) to give it a try and upgrade to newer releases of the base operating system. In order to do so I added the apt sources for Lenny from debian archives and gave my ReadyNAS a cruel "apt-get dist-upgrade". Of course it got stuck in boot, but after a firmware reinstall I got most of it up and running again - Meaning I can access the user shares from Windows, all shares from Unix, and all my servers are running fine. The bad thing is however that frontview doesnt work anymore (and this was stated multiple times in the forums) and that some dependencies are broken.

Has anyone ever tried this and can provide me with some manual steps to get this (hopefully) through to wheezy with a running system ? Or is it a waste of time to try this and should I install ReadyOS 6 from scratch and recover my data from the NV+ ?

Thx,
Max

You'd be best to backup your data if you haven't already and to put OS6 on your system if you want to use Wheezy. Using OS6 you'd also get the newer kernel that has. Do note that if you use OS6 and run into issues running it on a legacy system you will need to seek help here or from a 3rd party.
  • Thx mdgm, that was expected...

I have backed up all the important data on the Ultra 4 to an old NV+, and the most important data to additionally to an external USB drive... Still I have some data on the Ultra that is not really important, however I would like to avoid to loose it.

Can i use disk striping on the NV+, meaning having 4 disks 2 GB each in it with a total capacity of 8 GB ? Reason I'm asking this is I have roughly 7.5 GB in use on the Ultra 4 in total and would like to do a full backup of it to the NV+... It seems i have no way to configure what RAID is used on the NV+, correct ? 2 GB disks for that old system is still the limit ?

    Thx again,
    Max

I'm assuming you mean TB everywhere.

2 TB drives are the limit, but you can configure the RAID.

JBOD (4 volumes of 2 TB each) is the safest way to get 8 TB of storage, but it will require you to manually balance the data across the 4 volumes. 7.5 TB total data might make that difficult to do. With JBOD, if a disk fails you only lose what's on the disk.

RAID-0 (1 volume of 8 TB) is the other option. That eliminates the need to balance, but it is quite fragile. If any disk fails, you lose everything.

Both options require you to switch to "flexraid". Read pages 19-23 of the user manual (http://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/ ... 6Dec11.pdf)
