Hmmm. The docs for that version mention updating the ClamAV version, but I can't see how that would help. I haven't updated the firmware on my device so it must be running the same version of ClamAV that has worked for months. As I see it the problem must be at the Netgear end.
Also. I would prefer not to install a Beta version unless the problem has definitely been identified and is in fact in the firmware and not the server side.

It could just as easily be the ClamAV servers (and perhaps linked to the old version of ClamAV that the NAS is running).
FWIW, the AV updates don't go through the Netgear servers.

Up to you of course.

Fair enough, but as I recall the last time this occured I believe Netgear were in discussion with the ClamAV team about this issue and there was some talk about ClamAV needing to do something.
If that is the case, it may well be that the problem is at the 'server end', but ClamAV's server, not Netgear's.
As you say it's up to me and for the moment at least I'd prefer not to expend a lot of thime on this (as I did last time). Hopefully, since the problem has oscurred before, it shouldn't be quite so hard for Netgear / ClamAV to put it right.

You might also want to double-check that you don't have a full OS partition.

Anything is possible of course, but it seems a bit spooky that two other people have experienced the same problem at the same time.
I've checked the logs and there is nothing in there apart from the two alerts about ClamAV not updating.

ReadyNAS OS must be running version 0.100 of ClamAV. Another thread noted that this version went end-of-life on 10/29/21 (as indicated in https://docs.clamav.net/faq/faq-eol.html#version-support-matrix).

Re: Antivirus scanner definition file update failed
It does seem to be using 0.100. This is what my "freshclam -v" claims as it refuses to run:
Software version from DNS: 0.103.3

Re: Antivirus scanner definition file update failed
And I am obviously using 0.100.2.... I read the link, https://docs.clamav.net/faq/faq-upgrade.html, which I actually don't understand... Do I really have to update this manually, isn't that taken care of by the update feature of the ReadyNAS?!

For some reason setting "check for updates" to "Beta" doesn't find it. So you will need to install it manually.
That isn't difficult - unzip the relevant package in the beta announcement, and use the "install firmware" button on the system->settings->update page.

Ah... Ok, that seems rather straight forward. A bit reluctant to install beta versions though. Any idea when a stable release solving this matter will come?

The Beta announcement doesn't list the RN428 as a supported system. Is that just an oversight and the x86_64 version actually does support the RN428?

I suspect just an oversight. It'll run on other platforms (legacy Pro and Ultra systems converted to OS-6). There isn't much platform-specific code.

Re: Antivirus scanner definition file update failed
I'm also encoutering this problem. Running version 6.10.5 Hotfix 1. The AV has not been able to update since October. Can you please help me in solving this issue? This is happening across all devices running 6.10.5.
Tried removing files in /var/lib/clamav folder but freshclam is unable to update. Also tried changing the DBMirror to a specific working mirror but still receiving the same message. As you can see from below, access to DNS and Gateway is not a problem for this box. Any ideas? Thanks for your help.

Re: Antivirus scanner definition file update failed
I too and suffering this problem.
In this post I will reach out to two Netgear support people ( @B_L & @dingjs1421 ) that have been VERY helpful in the past in escalating issues such as these.
My Technical Details
Following a technical details on what I am seen
Firmware
My RN314 is running 6.10.5 Hotfix 1.
Problem Timeline
The log shows via the UI the following;
Oct 30, 2021 10:47:45 PM System: Antivirus scanner definition file update failed due to download failure. Check your Internet connection. Oct 29, 2021 10:46:42 PM System: Antivirus scanner definition file was updated to 62.26337.
So on Oct 29, 2021 AV updated as expected and started failing on each update attempt as noted in the first log entry on Oct 30, 2021. Each failure to update shows a log entry like Oct 30, 2021.
Prior to Oct 30, 2021 AV was updating successfully for many many months.
All times above are UTC+11 (Australia)
Problem Diagnosis Info
To look into this problem I ran via SSH freshclam -v to gather some details and not the following (long output from the command below) which @markv also sees in his update.

This look to me an issue that NETGEAR should be aware and is able to to give advice!
I hope that @B_L or @dingjs1421 or someone from Netgear is monitoring this topic.

Re: Antivirus scanner definition file update failed
Hi @StephenB
Just noted your post re https://community.netgear.com/t5/ReadyNAS-Beta/ReadyNASOS-6-10-6-Beta/m-p/2151119#M10972
I agree this looks like it might resolve this issue though I am reluctant install BETA firmware.

Re https://community.netgear.com/t5/ReadyNAS-Beta/ReadyNASOS-6-10-6-Beta/m-p/2151119#M10972 -
- When will 6.10.6 be generally available?
- What is your recomendation given that this issue is impacting all 6.10.5 firmeware systems with no options to resolve other then to use 6.10.6 firmware?
Cheers
Rob

Re: Antivirus scanner definition file update failed
Hi all,
It looks like CLAMAV no longer supports updates via HTTP via port 80 or at least it is blocked now resulting in the failing virus-definition-update.
Via the beta-version 6.10.6-RC1 it is working (update is done via HTTPS and probably port 443)
I am running this version already for some days, my NAS is working fine, but after a while I see (or saw) a lot of error-messages in the Systemd-Journal.LOG file (although still my NAS is functioning fine):
Nov 01 10:16:40 Geldrop clamonacc[5223]: ERROR: ClamFanotif: internal error (readlink() failed), 7, Bad file descriptor
Nov 01 10:16:40 Geldrop clamonacc[5223]: ClamWorker: fd already closed ... recovering ...
Nov 01 10:16:40 Geldrop clamonacc[5223]: ERROR: ClamFanotif: internal error (readlink() failed), 7, Bad file descriptor
Nov 01 10:16:40 Geldrop clamonacc[5223]: ClamWorker: fd already closed ... recovering ...
Of course looking at the error-messages I am not fully convienced CLAMAV is working as it should... 😞

Re: Antivirus scanner definition file update failed
AV updates started failing here again last week. Installing FW 6.10.6 (RC1) looks to have fixed it.

Re: Antivirus scanner definition file update failed
PS - after my post here, the Netgear Community site popped up a satisfaction survey. Upon completing and clicking "submit", got a page with a huge red flag on it stating the submission failed with an unexpected error. Too funny. Maybe the site needs a FW upgrade.

Re: Antivirus scanner definition file update failed
FWIW I posted this in the beta thread too:
I too am having the dreaded "antivirus scanner definition file failed due to download failure check your internet connection" error. (My internet connection is fine.) I am running 6.10.5 Hotfix 1. I don't like to run Beta software and can wait a bit for this to go live but it would be very helpful if we could get an update when the fix for this error will be pushed to a live (non-beta) update. Any chance of getting information on that?
Thanks.
