Error connecting - Backup job settings for MacBook Pro Yosemite to Readynas Duo v1

ReadyNAS Duo v1

Firmware RAIDiator 4.1.14

Standard File Protocols CIFS and AFP checked on

Home network - Network IPv4 assignment using values from a DHCP server

Macbook Pro

OS X Yosemite 10.10.5

FrontView on Chrome browser to access ReadyNAS

This is similar to post https://community.netgear.com/t5/Backing-up-to-your-ReadyNAS/Backup-Mac-to-ReadyNas/m-p/870820#M5014

The OP was able to at least pass Test Connection and was using SMBUp to override Apple's SMB implementation. One difference is that I am not trying to bypass Apple's SMB implementation and not using SMBUp or any third party tool. Is the Apple SMB implementation still a problem?

Here's what I tried to do:

I AM able to do a TimeMachine backup from my MacBook (and I can connect to my ReadyNAS from Finder using CIFS and AFP).

But since I want to backup a folder from my MacBook to my Readynas Duo v1 and am also using Windows laptops on my home network that access the same folder/subfolders/files, I'd prefer to backup using Remote: Windows/NAS (Timestamp) or another file protocol if that is possible.

On the Mac:

I checked File Sharing on in the System Preferences -> Sharing, and added the folder (will call it Folder for this post) to be backed up in Shared Folders. Also ensured that my account name under Users has Read/Write access. Noted that "Computers on your local network can access your computer at: MyName-MacBook-Pro.local"

Also noted option - "Other users can access shared folders on this computer, and administrators all volumes, at “afp://myname-mbp” or “smb://myname-mbp”

On the ReadyNAS FrontView in Chrome:

When setting up the backup job using Remote: Windows/NAS Timestamp, I provide the following:

Host: the computer name that other computers on my local network can access -  MyName-MacBook-Pro.local

Path: Folder (this is the shared folder)

User name: myaccountname (my short account name)

Password: *****

When I hit Test Connection, I get the error message: "The page at ... says: Error connecting to //MyName-MacBook-Pro.local/Folder"

I tried changing the Host name to smb://myname-mbp and also tried changing Path to Users/myaccountname/Folder but get continue to get the Error connecting message.

What is/are the problem(s) with my Backup Job settings?  The ReadyNAS Duo v1 manual says that Mac OS X uses the Windows/NAS protocol (although AFP is preferred).

A (related?) problem is that when I try to uncheck AFP (or CIFS) in FrontView - Services - Standard File Protocol, I get a browser error message - "Could not find the masquerade address in DNS.  Please check that the value has a DNS entry or enter a numeric IP address.", and the AFP/CIFS remains checked. Would appreciate help with this too!

Thanks!

    Hi konnichiwa,

    Welcome to the community!

Have you tried it on another MAC OS X machine? Perhaps a Windows PC? I have also sent you a PM for some instructions.

    Kind regards,

      Replied to your PM, thanks.

In summary, no luck - same Error connecting. Am able to backup from a Windows 7 laptop. Tried with another Mac (but also running Yosemite) and had same Error connecting.  Also able to browse the ReadyNAS Duo from my Mac in Frontview Backup (and Finder) but the ReadyNAS Duo v1 refuses to connect to my Mac.

Will try and find a Mac that is running OS X to see if the problem is with Yosemite.

I finally just ended up using FreeFileSync 7.6. It gives a lot more flexibility including Mirrroring, Updating and two-way syncing. Also has real-time syncing.
