File Locked for editing by another user

We have just installed a ReadyNAS NVX in our office. It has 2-4 PC's connected, one running Vista the rest on XP. Has 2 x 1TB drives as delivered by Netgear.

We are having a random but regular problem (daily) with loosing access to files in the middle of an edit.

The file is opened, changes made and then when go to save get the message 'File is locked for editing by another user'. This is impossible since the file is already open on that computer.

We are forced to 'Save As.. a new version but then next save the same thing happens. The files are MS Office 2007 and Adobe CS4 files - no pattern there. This problem usually starts on the Vista machine but once these files are playing up it's impossible to open any of them on another machine even when they have been closed on the Vista machine.

Re-bootting all PC's sorts out the problem until it happens again.

Getting annoying so would appreciate help. Have just updated to the lates Raidar software also.

  • I have exactly the same problem.

I have only had the ReadyNas for a week now and the amount of problems it has caused me is beyond belief.

Worst purchase I have ever made.

Please contact support using the info in my sig and they can help you resolve the problem.
  • ewok, thanks for your help, but I contacted support 7 times during the first week after purchase to resolve my initial issue with setting up the readynas, and after 7 separate phone-calls support were unable to fix the problem, so I lost faith in them altogether.

Did your calls get escalated to a higher level of support?
  • Had this problem 10+ years ago on a Novell LAN system; opportiunistic locking was the problem. I think there are settings to turn this off in the ReadyNAS front end. I'll do some checking at work on Monday.
  • We have also had this same issue with our ReadyNAS Pro. Oplocks was disabled and had been for a long time before this issue started showing. I've enabled oplocks once again to see if it makes a difference, but I disabled it in the first place because of random access errors.
