How to format an external USB drive from OS 6.1.1 ??
I feel a bit stupid, but I couldn't find a way to format an external USB drive with my 312 under OS 6.1.1.
The drive is mounted, it is even possible to access its content (it's an EXT3 drive generally used with a NVX)!

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredI can't see a way to format USB disks in the Dashboard either. Hopefully this feature will be added in the future.
- pdelgesGuideHopefully…
Thanks for confirming I'm not totally stupid. - adent1AspirantThe ability to format a USB Hard Disk that is attached to a NAS is a feature I used a lot in earlier ReadyNAS models.
I've now gone to use this on a customers RN312 unit, and find that this feature now doesn't exist.
I do not understand why this feature was removed for ReadyNAS OS version 6.
Please add this feature back in as soon as you get the chance. - evan2NETGEAR ExpertI filed a feature request to PM.

- ScottChapmanApprenticeanyway to do it from SSH? ANy idea what format it needs to be?
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredEXT3 is a fine format to use. It is possible to format using SSH. One would hope formatting an external USB drive will be added to the GUI in a future release.
What format do you want? NTFS/EXT3/EXT4/BTRFS/exFAT/something else ? - ScottChapmanApprenticeDrive is already formatted as NTFS and that didn't work. I assume exFAT also doesn't work.
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredHow did you format it with NTFS? If you format it to NTFS using your Ultra does it then work if you connect it to your 316?
- xeltrosApprenticeDoing it via SSH is of course possible.
Look at fdisk ans mkfs commands.
Another way is to format it with another computer. Gparted will do perfectly, windows will do Exfat/NTFS. I believe there is an old EXT3 driver hanging around to read linux formatted drive with windows. HFS is another option with paragon software.
Exfat should work if you install exfat-fuse and exfat-utils packages.
by default OS6 supports EXT3, EXT4, NTFS, FAT32, HFS+. I believe you can add BTRFS to the list (linux doesn't differentiate internal and external drives) and exfat with the good packets installed via SSH (note that Netgear may deny support if SSH is activated).
