Input/Output Error
Hi all,
I have recently moved my data from an old 1100 to one with bigger HDDs. The newer one is running 4.1.8 and 4 x 2Gb drives in XRAID. My backups from a readynas share to the front USB port used to work fine on the old Readynas, but not on the new one, the logs are full of errors like this:
Error encountered copying data from source path ==> /USB_HDD_6/ due to unknown reason. Please see log.
cp: cannot create regular file '/USB_HDD_6/./diections.tiff': Input/output error
cp: cannot create regular file '/USB_HDD_6/./word.doc': Input/output error
cp: cannot create directory '/USB_HDD_6/./Drivers': Input/output error
cp: cannot create directory '/USB_HDD_6/./Fonts': Input/output error
cp: cannot create regular file '/USB_HDD_6/./BACKUP-E.CMD': Input/output error
cp: cannot create regular file '/USB_HDD_6/./Statement_Jan_2010.pdf': Input/output error
cp: cannot create regular file '/USB_HDD_6/./._diections.tiff': Input/output error
at roughly the same time, there are entries like this in the system.log
Dec 12 08:16:12 readynas kernel: ::::::::<3>sd 0:0:0:0: rejecting I/O to offline device
Dec 12 08:16:12 readynas kernel: sd 0:0:0:0: rejecting I/O to offline device
Dec 12 08:16:12 readynas last message repeated 31 times
Dec 12 08:16:12 readynas kernel: FAT: Directory bread(block 1430132) failed
Dec 12 08:16:12 readynas kernel: sd 0:0:0:0: rejecting I/O to offline device
Dec 12 08:16:12 readynas kernel: FAT: Directory bread(block 1430133) failed
I have tried various USB drives in NTFS and FAT with no change. All are USB-powered 2.5" drives that worked on the old readynas. They seem to mount correctly, but the backups won't run.
Any help with what is happening here would be appreciated.

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredAre you able to try putting an AC powered USB hub between the USB disk and the NAS?
- industryiqAspirantThanks for the suggestion. Will try that and comment here. (A hub was not my first choice, as I thought it might break the association between disk-name and "front_usb_port" which is the target for the readynas backup).
- JBKAspirantI have the same problem and are of course interested in some soulution of this.
I have three different BackUp jobs, one is working correct, the other two I get different errors from every time:

And this job worked correct one time:
Säkerhetskopieringen slutfördes. Tue Jan 31 01:10:03 CET 2012 (This is the correct job)
And this, with several thousands of problems, I didn´t copy them all - for your sake :)

well - do we know why this appear randomly?
I do also have 2,5" USB powered HDD.
Have a great day!
//JB - bkvAspirantI had the same problem a while ago. I could not figure it out, so I reformatted the backup drive. Since then I have not seen it.

I should not have said that. It has started again. Perhaps my disk is bad after all.
