NFS Mount Problems on Ubuntu and MacOS

I'm having trouble mounting NFS shares from my ReadyNAS 600. I have the media share setup with default access set to read/write. On Ubuntu 8.10 I get the error:
miker@roundrock:/mnt/media$ sudo mount 10.0.1.11:/media /mnt/media
mount.nfs: internal error

On Mac OS 10.5.5 I get:
pittsburgh:Volumes miker$ sudo mount 10.0.1.11:/media /Volumes/test
Cannot MNT RPC: RPC: Remote system error - Connection refused
Cannot MNT RPC: RPC: Remote system error - Connection refused
mount_nfs: can't access /media: Permission denied

Both these machines have other network connectivity to the NAS. The NAS is running 4.1.3.

Any ideas?

What are your NFS access settings for the media share. You can also try restarting the NFS server by disabling and re-enabling the service in the Services tab.
  • Default access: read/write
Root privilege-enabled hosts: 10.0.1.13 (which is the Ubuntu box and the only one I really care about)

    Disabling/re-enabling the service did nothing.

What is the output of "showmount -e $nas_ip" from both your Ubuntu box and the Mac?
  • Ubuntu gives me:
    portmap getport: RPC: Success

    The Mac gives me:
Cannot MNT RPC: RPC: Program not registered
    can't connect socket for RPC

Try going to the Backup Manager in Frontview, go to the Add New Backup page, enter NFS as the protocol, and enter the NAS's IP address and share as the path, then hit Test Connection. Does it succeed or fail?
  • It failed.

I tried restarting the NAS. This seemed to help, because it go showmount to display the shares on Ubuntu, but when I try to mount it fails, and a later showmount shows no shares.

    miker@roundrock:/$ showmount -e 10.0.1.11
    Export list for 10.0.1.11:
    /c/backup *
    /c_2008_11_09_00_00/backup *
    /c/media (everyone)
    /c_2008_11_09_00_00/media (everyone)
    miker@roundrock:/$ sudo mount 10.0.1.11:/media /mnt/media
    mount.nfs: internal error
    miker@roundrock:/$ showmount -e 10.0.1.11

That's strange. Try restarting the NAS (or getting to the point where showmount works), then try the backup manager test connection again. Then try mounting it in Ubuntu (or get it to the state where showmount doesn't work), then try the test connection again.
  • I am actually having a similar problem with ReadyNAS DUO

Upon fresh boot of the NAS, showmount -e works and shows my exports

As soon as I try to mount the exports onto my Ubuntu box, the mount fails and showmount no longer works.... any ideas?
  • My solution ended up being turning off jumbo frames on the NAS. Hopefully that helps
