RN102 - Network speed very slow (capped at 10MB/s)
Hello,
I am having a network issue with my RN102. Whatever I do, all my downloads can't exceed 10MB per second (megabytes not megabits). It stays somewhere around 8.5MB/s actually.
If I'm downloading multiple files and/or with multiple software, the speed divides between all of them, still at a total of under 10MB/s.
I'm running the latest 6.10.4 RNOS. I made sure there is nothing blocking the speed : my internet speed is somewhere around 900MB/s (optical fiber), i'm plugged with a brand new ethernet cable (10Gbps RJ45 cat7) to a Nighthawk switch, which indicates the port speed is indeed 1Gb (matching the network interface on the NAS).
The same thing occurs within the LAN with SMB. File transfers are very slow and also capped at 10MB/s (making the downloads from the internet ultra slow if I'm transferring a file through the network at the same time). It's as if the network adapter is actually a 100Mbps. Yet, the admin page shows : "Bandwidth : 1 Gbit/s" in the network page.
I made sure nothing was running or using too much CPU with top.
I did the following speed test on www.testdebit.info :
wget -O /dev/null http://bouygues.testdebit.info/1G.iso
It downloads a 1GB file to /dev/null, thus not limited by HDD speed if I understand correctly.
The speed is the same (< 10MB/s)
When I download the same 1GB test file on my computer, it takes under 10 seconds, at around 100MBytes/sec (I hardly have enough time to see it before the download finishes)
I don't know what's limiting my network speed... It has been like this for as long as I've had the NAS.
Thanks in advance for your help 🙂

Re: RN102 - Network speed very slow (capped at 10MB/s)
UP 🙂
I ran additional tests with NAS Tester to check my LAN+HDD read/write speed :
Here is the output :
NAS performance tester 1.7 http://www.808.dk/?nastester Running warmup... Running a 400MB file write on T: 5 times... Iteration 1: 61,40 MB/sec Iteration 2: 56,52 MB/sec Iteration 3: 58,62 MB/sec Iteration 4: 53,11 MB/sec Iteration 5: 60,18 MB/sec ----------------------------- Average (W): 57,97 MB/sec ----------------------------- Running a 400MB file read on T: 5 times... Iteration 1: 33,23 MB/sec Iteration 2: 34,58 MB/sec Iteration 3: 34,35 MB/sec Iteration 4: 32,43 MB/sec Iteration 5: 33,71 MB/sec ----------------------------- Average (R): 33,66 MB/sec -----------------------------
While it's not very high (weirdly read is slower than write) it is still way above 10MB/sec. So LAN speed is OK and HDD speed is OK.
It would seem that the bottleneck is definitely not the hardware, it appears to be directly related to internet downloads.

Re: RN102 - Network speed very slow (capped at 10MB/s)
Quick update, just ran "wget -O /dev/null http://bouygues.testdebit.info/1G.iso" once more, and I don't know what happened, it's as if it got fixed overnight : the download speed is now over 70MB/sec.
Yet I didn't change a single thing.
I also installed speedtest from speedtest.net like this :
sudo apt-get install gnupg1 apt-transport-https dirmngr export INSTALL_KEY=379CE192D401AB61 sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys $INSTALL_KEY echo "deb https://ookla.bintray.com/debian generic main" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/speedtest.list sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install speedtest
and the download speed was around 690Mbps, so it seems to be working fine now.
I'll monitor this. Maybe it's a CPU bottleneck issue ? Downloads slower when python scripts are using a lot of CPU ? I can't figure this out. Anyway, i'll post an update if there's still an issue
