RND4000 invalid checksum error when update firmware now cannot backup

ReadyNAS NV+ V1 (RND4000) with 4 x 1.5 TB HDD

trying to update firmware from 4.1.10 to 4.1.16

Downloaded zip file from netgear website, extracted to computer, installed locally, validates image, yet when click on "Perform System Update" get message: "Invalid checksum detected in the update file. Update aborted."

Downloaded again and same issue. Tried to update to 4.1.15 and same issue.

Now the ReadyNAS is experiencing strange performance issues. When I try to backup to an external HDD, it starts the process, then fails after several minutes with an unknown failure. Trying to manually backup by connecting externall HDD to my laptop and drag and drop, when trying to copy large folder it also fails and then says it cannot find the NAS. Can see the NAS in file explorer and in RAIDiator, but cannot copy files.

Try to reboot NAS through RAIDiator, yet after click apply nothing happens. Only way to shut the unit down is to hold down the blue power button on the unit front panel.

Restart and then can see the NAS and access, but also cannot copy large folders with many files to backup the drive.

Is perhaps the memory on the OS flashdrive full?

Need help to 1) backup the files on the NAS 2) update the firmware and 3) fix the strange performance issues.

Thank you for your advice

I think you are close, but not quite right.  The system installs the OS onto the drives, and the OS partition on your model is only 2 GB in size.  That can become full.

Paid support (my.netgear.com) is probably your best option (if you purchased the NAS new).  You should ask for per-incident support when you contact them.

If you are experienced with the linux command line and have ssh enabled on your NAS, then it is possible to diagnose and solve this on your own.  But I don't recommend trying this if you don't have some understanding of linux already.

I have Putty on my computer and can use SSH to address issues. Can you walk through the specific steps to address and fix the issues or provide links to other dicussions that outline how to fix the issues?

      Much appreciated

The first step is to ssh into the NAS, and look at how full the OS partition is.

        # cd //

        # df . -h

        # df . -i

The assumes that you've enabled ssh in the NAS (installed the EnableRootSSH add on for your plaform).  If you haven't already done that, the install might fail, since it does require some space on the OS partition.  As a reminder, you log in as root, using the NAS admin password.

Normally the OS partition is about 20% full.
