Readynas 102 not backing up and freezing after upgrade to 6.4.2
My client has a Readynas 102 2x3tb system It is backed up by 2 x WD 3TB disks which are rotated and plugged into the front of the Nas. It has always been a bit problematic in that the WD driv...

O.K. I think this discussion has run its course.
Now that this is fixed in 6.5.0 if you have any issues on that you should open a new thread.
I'm closing this thread.

Thanks for the detailed feedback. It does indeed sound like a similar problem. I Was also asked to test the backup drives but I know they are ok. Like you they were working perfectly until the firmware update.
I am concerned about this as if you have been having issues since December what are the chances of me getting this sorted this week when I have to go on site and fix it?

Hi
Well if this is any help as I can still use the rear sockets then you can do the same.
However if you have been using the front socket as I did, that is insert a device, press the button and then it auto demounts at the end of the process then you'll have to find a work around.
Rear sockets don't appear to auto demount after a backup plus you'll have to set a routine in the backup tab and manually set it to run, then manually demount the drive via the systems tab. If you don't manually and correctly demount then the 102 will see the drive as having an error when you try to use them again.
Sorry I'm not an IT expert, I'm a building services engineer, so my knowledge is somewhat limited by 'common sense'.
In this respect, Netgear have also told me that I'm using the wrong unit for business, which really takes the biscuit. Yes I have perhaps 25GB of business data on a unit which has 150GB total, the rest being personal data. I have no apps running and nobody except me uses the unit so it's not stressed but again 'helpfully' Netgear grasp at straws rather than see the common sense in this situation which is up to installing 6.4.0 all was fine.
I wonder how I would get on with my customers if in November they had a leak to a air conditioning system and as at end of February I was still blaming them for using it.
As I said I'm not an expert but if I can help then ask.
As for a solution from Netgear.....or even some useful advice.....you'll have a long wait.

Thanks again.
Using the rear USB would be a work around but its no good if it has to be manually done really. Perhaps someone at Netgear can advise.
I was also told the 102 is not a busiiness product but its only used by two Macs for sharing data and this isnt really an excuse for it not working and firmware upgrades causing the backup to fail.
To be fair to Netgear they were very helpful in sorting out the share speed issues with the Apple computers so I am hoping they can come up with the good on this one. I am now going to site a week today so I need to have a solution in place by then.

Hi
The work around for the rear sockets is only needed if you want to unplug the backup drives, if you are happy to leave it or them in place then no work around is needed.
Simply go to admin, go to backup up, set up a backup routine and set a schedule to back up say over night. This is what I do, I have two drives plugged in to both sockets and they back up alternative nights. Times and days to back up can be set via the schedule, its a tick box arrangement.
However if at any time you want to remove the backup drives you must correctly demount them from the system admin page else they will flag up an error when next used on the 102.
Happy to give you examples later if you want.
Cheers

Ok thanks. So the schedule will work if you set it up in the admin page but you have to eject from there as well in order to not corrupt the drive? That will work as a work around until its fixed assuming it doesnt take four times longer. I think its backing up 300GB.
They rotate the drives each week so it could be a Friday afternoon job.
Many thanks for your help. I think Netgear need to come back to us though and anyone else with the problem with a fix ASAP though really.
