Syncing / backing up NV+ to newer model

Hello -

Currently have ReadyNAS NV+ (RAIDiator 4.1.13).  Have lots of movies, photos, etc. stored.  Would like to purchase newer ReadyNAS and use as main device, with the NV+ as it's backup.

What's the best way to sync/backup to the NV+ with current ReadyNAS?  Would love to use sync, but realize difference in models.

  • For moving the files from the old to the new, "Pulling" from the new NAS instead of pushing with the old can help alleviate any file ownership issues on the new one.  While Rsync is best for incremental backups, I believe Windows Timestamp is a bit faster for a one-time thing.  If you are going to use the NV+ as the backup for the same files, then an Rsync backup initiated by the NV+ is probably best, as you can set the power on time and thenbackup time.  If the backup exceeds the power off time, it won't power down till the backup is complete.

If you aren't already in user security mode on the NV+, then you should switch to it.

If you don't really care about ownership per se, I also suggest setting the owner/group for each share on the NV+ to admin/admin.
