Time machine backup question....

Hello - hope you can help

I have two ReadyNAS Duos, both on the latest version. One is primary and the other secondary with backups from one to the other using Rsync over a simple LAN, and all is good.

The primary is also set up for timemachine backups from a MacBook Pro, and again, all is good but I also want to set backups of the time machine form the primary Duo to the secondary and have a few questions.

- I believe that the timemachine backup has to be a push, that is, from the primary to the secondary, a pull from the secondary device not currently being an option. Is that correct?
- Also, on the primary device, the destination needs to state ‘c/.timemachine’. Is that correct?
- Does the secondary Duo have to have timemachine enabled for that to work?
- Other than the first backup, is the timemachine backup an incremental, or will it be a full back up every time? A full back up every time would be a problem….
- Does a particular Id and/or password need to be used? I ask as I’ve never managed to make a successful test connection
- Anything else that I need to be aware of for it to work?

I'm stating 'Time Machine' as the source, and for the destination ...'Remote: Windows/NAS (Timestamp)', the target host name and a Path of 'c/.timemachine'

On the other hand, am I over thinking it all & all I need do is select 'Time Machine' as the source on the primary box and use NFS for an initial copy to a newly created directory on the secondary box, then change that to rsync like any other backup?

Many thanks

Enable Time Machine on the backup NAS setting the same quota as on the primary NAS then disable it again.

Setup a backup job on the primary NAS choosing "Time Machine" as the source and a new share on the backup NAS as the destination. Use NFS then change to using Rsync.

The Windows/NAS Timestamp should only be used for NAS to NAS backups if one of the NAS units supports neither NFS nor Rsync. CIFS is not a native Linux protocol.
  • Great thanks - I was clearly over-thining it. The first backup is going to take a while so I'll set it running while I'm away next week.

    Thanks for your help!

One more thing: of course you should backup the Time Machine share whilst not running a Time Machine backup.
