UPS over SNMP "UPS Communication error."

I have a ReadyNAS Pro monitoring an APC UPS over SNMP. It is an APC model Smart-UPS 1500 outfitted with an AP9630 "UPS Network Management Card 2". IP address is fixed.

I have no problem initially connecting. But eventually the AP9630 will issue a warm-start. As far as I can tell, this is something all APC comm cards do to ensure that the network is up and it cannot be suppressed.

When this happens, the ReadyNAS will report a "UPS Communication error." I will then have to manually login and reestablish the SNMP connection. ReadyNAS FrontView does show a UPS error but the page where SNMP is configured does not show any issue - it continues to show that SNMP is selected and the IP address is unchanged. You just "have to know" to disable and then re-enable the SNMP connection and re-enter the IP address.

ReadyNAS should at least attempt to reestablish communication automatically. I assume my system configuration is the exact and intended use of SNMP UPS monitoring. It should just work.

In the meantime, is there a chron-job I can run to check for SNMP UPS connection and then attempt to reestablish it?

  • I have exactly the same configuration with the same problem. I also get a "UPS Communication error" after which the UPS is not monitored anymore, which happens once a week or so.

I also would like to see the ReadyNAS to attempt to restore the connection after a UPS Communication error occurred!
