<10mbps - Very Slow Performance

I have purchased a ReadyNas Ultra 2 and installed 2x3TB Hitachi 7200 disks (on compatibility list) and updated to latest firmware - all ok. Except I have a TB of data to copy across and it is painfully slow.

I was struggling at 1.5mbps from ubuntu (disk) and thought this was the issue, but Windows (Vista 64) gave the same results even though my LAN Speed Tests showed 10+ times that speed from PC to PC.

However, I had powerlines in this and I know that slows everything, so I have now connected NAS and PC directly to the Virgin Media (VMDG280) MediaHub and followed the optimization guide (except jumboframes). Now IOMeter shows a speed of 10 read and 10 write (following the guide on here).

I can now copy at 8mbps, but this is still painfully slow.

What can I check next? NIC is good quality and recent drivers - never had LAN speed issues before.

Now that you mention your router, have a look at this : viewtopic.php?f=21&t=48910&p=280066&hilit=VMDG280#p280066.
Your router is only 100Mbps rated and there seem to be lots of issues with it.

Thanks for the link....and to say there are a lot of issues with it is the understatement of the year. It's the worst bit of kit I have ever owned, but Virgin only supply these now.

I will have a read and see what can be done.

I suggest that you buy a cheap Gigabyte switch and put that in front of the Router. Connect everything to the switch and just let the Router do routing.
Unless you need to manage the switch (port control, RSTP etc), then apart from Jumbo frames there's not much else the switch needs to do.
I like the Netgear GS108t, but it may be a bit more than you need and costs more than any basic switch.
Have a look on the forums for something suitable. Maybe the Netgear GS608 - unmanaged but does JF and costs £41 on Amazon UK.
