ReadyNAS 102 access from Mac slow

ReadyNAS 102 access from Mac slow

I have a ReadyNAS 102 that is connected to my Cisco gigabit network switch using CAT6 cable. I can access the shares rather quickly from any one of several PC machines on the same switch, but am finding that accessing it with my new iMac using OS Sierra is a nightmare. It will load the first couple of levels in the network file structure from my iMac with only a little hangtime, but when I try to access the folders that actually have my files in them it takes over an hour to load the file names in that folder. I have tried both SMB and AFP protocols to access and both seem to have the same delay. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Re: ReadyNAS 102 access from Mac slow

There are some changes we can make which can help with SMB. I've sent you a PM.

Re: ReadyNAS 102 access from Mac slow

I'm having the same problem with our Netgear ReadyNas 314, using a mac with Sierra OS 10.12.4. Should I create a new post or can you PM me also?

Thanks so much,

Kristen

Re: ReadyNAS 102 access from Mac slow

herald it looks like you ran into the recent ReadyCLOUD issue. Did you have any data in your ReadyCLOUD home folder share?

No. That was just me trying to figure out how to make the NAS work with my Mac. Thought maybe a different file would help.

It is much faster now. Thanks! I have one more drive that needs to have whatever you did done to it too. I'll PM you.

We're planning to have a GUI option to enable these changes in a future release.

Re: ReadyNAS 102 access from Mac slow

Netgear had to log in to my system and make some changes that users don't have access to.

Most likely because it required use of ssh.

Re: ReadyNAS 102 access from Mac slow

I haven't received a response for my inquiry yet.  Somewhere in this thread there was a hint that the setting would be part of a future firmware update.  I've received 2 recently but no setting.

Re: ReadyNAS 102 access from Mac slow

Firmware 6.7.5

I've been fighting this issue and looking for a solution forever. I was almost ready to throw this thing out until I saw this post.  Can you help?  Transfer speeds are abysmal at best and it takes forever just to load file names in Finder, never had this problem with PC, just the iMac.

Thanks!

Re: ReadyNAS 102 access from Mac slow

One option is to try 6.8.0-RC1 (beta).  It does have some OSX optimizations.

I'm running the beta firmware myself, but don't have any OSX systems.

Re: ReadyNAS 102 access from Mac slow

Thanks for the suggestion, sounds like the changes made by Netgear to some other users was effective, so I'll wait to see if they respond. If not I'll try the Beta. Thank you!

Re: ReadyNAS 102 access from Mac slow

I just tried the Beta, no change, can't top about 14MB/s transfer. Hopefully netgear will log in like they did for others and fix this!

Re: ReadyNAS 102 access from Mac slow

Some have seen that turning SMB signing off will improve performance.  For instance, https://community.netgear.com/t5/Using-your-ReadyNAS/Slow-ReadyNAS-RN104/m-p/1342850/highlight/true#...

Turning off the packet authentication does impact security (as I noted), but personally I'd have no problem doing that on a home network.

Re: ReadyNAS 102 access from Mac slow

Thanks, that helps, got read speeds up to 70MB/s and write up to as high as 40. I think that's the best I'm going to do! Thanks for the help!
