Roll back from 6.7.4 to 6.5.2 on a ReadyNAS 102 (no screen)?

I have a problem with a ReadyNAS 102 newly upgraded to 6.7.4 (shares not visible in ReadyCloud). I have a separate post about that here.

Failing a solution to that? It's under rebuild anyway (one drive empty except for test data, the other removed in advance of being replaced), so one option is to roll back to 6.5.2, which worked for me with ReadyCloud. I tried downloading 6.5.2 for ARM and using the manual firmware option, but of course the NAS detected that 6.5.2 was older and wouldn't install it.

So it seems that I would need to do it from a USB recovery jumpdrive. Can anyone tell me how to do it (noting that the 102 does not have a screen, and all the instructions I've read rely on screen prompts)?

Are there any pitfalls, specifically, in moving from 6.7.4 to 6.5.2?

Many thanks.

I attempted rolling back the firmware to 6.5.2 using a USB recovery drive, although I'm honestly not sure whether that part of the process worked. (There isn't a clear indicator on the 102s, so it isn't clear whether it's safe to power down. I powered down after 30 mins, based on Netgear's guidance to wait at least 20). Then I followed with a factory reset.

Well, something clearly happened. On the first reboot afterwards, parts of my system thought it was running my older, pre 6.5.2 version of 6.2.5 (for instance, older options, dialogues, and apps showed up, newer options and apps weren't there, and the cover screen said 6.2.5). But the system info still said 6.7.4, and said no further updates were available. I appeared to have some sort of Frankenstein OS running and I thought I'd probably bricked the thing.

Well, I rebooted again, and this time I seemed to be back to a full 6.7.4 - reported on all screens as 6.7.4, all the later options and apps were back. I counted myself lucky to still have a working system. But lo and behold, my original ReadyCloud problem was solved, too.

It appears on the face of it that a failed downgrade took place, but 6.7.4 was able to recover it pretty seamlessly. It even changed my RAID 1 single disk volumes, created while it was in the Frankenstein stage (yes, I know they shouldn't have been RAID 1, blame Frankenstein), to JBOD. I'm actually rather impressed.

I wouldn't recommend rolling back a 102, given the ambiguity of the process in the absence of a screen, unless you've tried absolutely everything else, and unless you've backed up your data, and unless you can afford to lose the hardware. (You can get used 102s on eBay cheap as anything now). It's also possible that the factory reset on its own would have resolved the problem - I probably should have tried that first. But this was my experience, for what it's worth.

Sounds like an OS Re-install probably would have resolved the problem you had.
