Genie unable to detect adaptor

Hi,
Recently destroyed my old USB adapter to my computer which has had windows 10 since I got it. So bought the N300, installed from CD but when it comes to detecting the adapter it simply doesn't happen. I've left it for over an hour in several different ports but it simply states "detecting" with no progress.
Checking my devices the computer recognizes the adapter is connected but claims there is a driver error. I'm updated to the newest driver as directed to by the netgear site but no change.
I am hopeless with computers so I have no idea what the issue is. I assumed it might be windows 10 but ive seen a lot of reviews from people having no problems at all with the n300. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Hi jape,
Download the latest driver from support site.

When installing the driver, disable first any antivirus installed on your computer.
