11 TopicsSMART errors on EDA500 not reported in log
I have two EDA500's attached to my RN516. Current firmware is 6.9.2, but this has apparently been going on in 6.7.5 and 6.8.1 before it (I skipped everything else in between). I have two drives with increasing SMART errors in one of the EDAs, and there is not one word about it in the main log. One has 153 reallocated sectors and 4 pending sectors and the other 41 reallocated sectors. smart_history.log shows these have been creeping up for months. They were not new when I put them in, and they have 64k and 25k hours respectively, so maybe that's to be expected at least on the one, but I also expect for the log to warn me about this. I only noticed this because the volume scrub locked up and the subsequent re-boot resulted in the volume being out of sync. I looked at the SMART stats to see if there was a clue there and, sure enough, it looks like one or both of those drives could be the culpret.. Note that I do not have an email address entered in the NAS, so I get no email notifications. But I really don't think that should matter. There are no SMART errors on the drives in the 516 itself or the other EDA, so I don't know if log entries would be made for those or not. Is there a bug, or is it just the way it is that these errors on an EDA500 go unreported? If it's intentional, it needs to be re-thought.1.3KViews0likes8CommentsEDA500 on RN516 - Scrub very slow
This problem has been previously reported by another user on an earlier version of the OS: ReadyNAS-516-2x-EDA500-Scrub-on-EDA500-very-slow. It persists in OS6.7.5. As scheduled, my main data volume (6x6TB XRAID=21.88TB) started a scrub and competed it in about 30 hours. My eda-1 volume (5x4TB XRAID=12.5TB) then began it's scrub. That initially locked up the NAS. The log shows eda scrub starting before data volume scrub was finished, which may be the reason for the lockup and likely extended the data volume scrub time. I need to space the out more in the schedule). I had to reboot and then manually re-started the eda scrub. It's going to take a lifetime (0.01% complete in 5 hours). Top shows CPU usage of around 4% for md125_raid5 with a priority of 20 and 2% for md125_resync.with a priority of 39. The really off thing is that I swear the eda volume scrub was in the 20% range at lock-up even though it had only been running a bit over a day. Could it have been running faster when the data volume scrub was ongoing? Is there anything I can do to safely speed this up? When will Netgear address this issue?3.8KViews0likes14Comments'Management service is offline' after 6.7.4 upgrade
I inadvertantly kicked off the firmware update to 6.7.4, and now although my RN314 has rebooted, and the display cycles between displaying ReadyNAS 314 6.7.4 and displaying the current state of a resync on the expansion volume (EDA500), I cannot access the Admin Page. The browser continually recycles at the end of the thermometer bar, and RAIDar lists "Management service is offline" as the status. (Both reflect Firmware: 6.7.4). I found an earlier thread and re-kicked off the firmware update, incase it hadnt completed - no change. I've downoaded the logs but don't even know where to start with the litany of files that that brought... I have an RN314 with 4 x 4TB WD40EFRX, and one EDA500 attached to the READ eSATA port with another 5 x 4TB WD40EFRX drives. I know the front eSATA port on the RN314 is shared eSATA / USB 2.0 - but is there anything to prevent plugging another EDA500 in there? Has anyone tried this?HGST DeskStar NAS 4TB latest model compatible with RN526X/EDA500? Hard Drive recommendations?
Hello NETGEAR and ReadyNAS Community, I just purchased my first NAS, the six-bay RN526X, along with the five-bay EDA500 expansion chassis with sixth-bay hot spare. My plan is to use six 4TB drives in a Flex-RAID6 volume on the RN526X, and five 4TB drives on the EDA500 in a Flex-RAID5 volume with a hot spare. I want to set up the ReadyNAS to back up the data from the main unit to the EDA500 every night. I've been trying to narrow down my hard drive selection, and have been considering the following combinations: 12 HGST (Hitachi) DeskStar NAS 4TB drives for both units; or Six WD Gold 4TB drives for the RN526X, with six WD Red 4TB drives for the EDA500; or 12 WD Red 4TB drives for both units I've found where to buy the latest model of HGST's DeskStar NAS 4TB drives, HDN726040ALE614. Unfortunately, when checking NETGEAR's ReadyNAS Hard Drive Compatibility List, this current drive model is not listed as compatible for either the RN526X or EDA500 (perhaps it is too new?). None of the Hitachi DeskStar NAS 4TB drive models currently listed as compatible are current, but legacy (meaning discontinued and difficult or impossible to buy new with warranty), according to page 2 of HGST's product sheet. Given this, and Netgear's statement on their Hard Drive Compatibility List that "NETGEAR Support can and will deny support on devices using drives not found on the official compatibility list," I have several questions for NETGEAR: Is the HDN726040ALE614 compatible with the RN526X and EDA500, and if so, will NETGEAR add it to the official compatibility list? Would I still be able to get support via these forums from NETGEAR and/or is my NETGEAR warranty affected in any way if I were to use this specific HGST drive model before it is added to the official compatiblity list (assuming it is compatible)? For the ReadyNAS Community: I am reconsidering getting any WD Reds after having to dig out my old PC to run the DOS-based WDIDLE3 utility on a pair of c. 2014 WD Greens to fix their "Intellipark" head-parking issue. I have read that some of the WD Reds have the same issue, and do not relish the thought of connecting six or 12 of them to my old PC to prevent some or all from parking the disk heads every eight seconds. Can anyone who recently purchased WD Red 4TB drives, model WD40EFRX, confirm that theirs did NOT suffer from this issue? In the WD Reds' favor, they do spin at a lower RPM (which should still be enough to saturate my gigabit Ethernet connection). I am slightly concerned about intermittent reports of heat and/or noise generated by the HGSTs in comparison, but encouraged by their reportedly superior reliability. I would like to order the hard drives ASAP as my new NAS units will be here soon, but I don't want to make a choice I will regret in regards to drive compatibility or reliability. Any suggestions or recommendations would be appreciated. Looking forward to having my data protected with Btrfs & ECC RAM. :) Thanks!Expanding the EDA500
I had a EDA500 attached to a RNAS314. The 314 is set for Raid5 with 4 x 3TB drives. The Expansion unit has 2 x3TB drives in a separate volume RAID1. I would like to either expand this volume by adding 2x 3TB drives or is it better to create a new volume? Also I noticed that by moving the mouse over the units they are reporting the wrong information (volume capacity, etc.) Is there a fix for this? ThanksUsing readynas formatted disks in a EDA 500
I have one slot available in my readynas 516. If I switch out all my hard drives with higher capacity disk, is it possible to use my old drives in the eda500 as they are still good, they are just less capacity. I am curious as a new volume will be created in the EDA500, so I hupothetically believe this will work, but it is a pricy gamble for me to test this out. Thank you and have a nice day, Frank3.1KViews0likes7CommentsReadyNAS Bonded Ethernet
I've recently purchase the RN314 and EDA500 unit. I would like to know can I bond the ethernet ports to a ProSafe 8-port Gigabit Ethernet Switch. I have around 10 TB of images I need to copy to the RN, will this halp in speed. In order words will bonding the ethernet ports give me 2 Gb network speed?3.6KViews0likes4Comments
