Hi, I’m having trouble with my orbi router with online gaming over WiFi. For the rest it works extremely well with high speed (400 down 40 up) and very low pings (10ms), all on WiFi. However with online gaming I got ping spikes and packet loss which makes it impossible to game online over WiFi. Over Ethernet it works great so it’s not my ISP that is the issue. How can I solve the spikes? There is not QoS option available in the routers interface. I have tried switching the satellite off but the problem remains. Hope somebody can help! Thanks ChristiaanGaming Lag - Firmware?
So here's my situation. Recenlty (last couple months) I have noticed significant lag wile playing COD on my PS4. At first I thought it was my controller, because my charactor was running around like I was drunk (looking left/right, etc was exaggerated). Plus there was a .5-1 sec lag between pulling the trigger and my gun actually firing, not to mention I was extremely choppy on comms (PS4 party). It was not happening all the time, but often enough to cause me to look into the issue further. After eliminating my controllers as the issue, I started to look at the router. I factory reset the router and manually configured it. QoS was turned on. After reset, I checked firmware and updated (1.0.3.20 to 1.0.3.24). Problem continued. Fast forward to this week. I updated to latest firmware (1.0.3.26). Performed a factory reset and manually configured router. Again, turned on QoS. Noticed major lag on my game when other devices are streaming content (wife streaming Hulu and daughter on YouYube Kids). One by one I eliminated devices and found the worst lag was beign caused by the iPad streaming YouTube Kids. I check the attached device list on the router config page and saw that my total DL usage was less than 15Mbps (UL was less than 1Mbps). I have a symmetircal 100Mbps fiber connection so bandwidh is not the issue. On a hunch, I grabbed my old WNR2000 router (yes from like 2009), manually configured the wireless settings to match that of the Nighthawk so all of my wirelss devices would connect without me having to reconfigure them. I turned off QoS and tested. Not a blip. I had 1 TV streaming Hulu, the iPad streaming YouTube Kids, my MS Surface streaming YouTube and my phone streaming YouTube and I experinced no lag whatsoever. So my $30 entry-level, older-than-dirt router was handling traffic better than my 1 year old $200 gaming router. Baffling to me. I went back to the Nighthawk and turned off QoS and matched all of the other network settings from my WNR2000. Lag was now worse even when only the iPad was streaming. Had to turn QoS back on, but lag continued, just not as bad. This prompted me to get into these forums to see if this was a known issue. It seems to me like downgrading the firmware is about my only option (as suggested by multiple users from various lag-related posts). As it sits, it will be unusable for FPS gaming unless I am the only one using the internet. So, before I play the download old firmware, factory reset, install old firmware, factory reset, manually configure and test game, I was wondering if someone coud suggest a specific firmware version that woud be recommended. Loading and testing firmware decrementally will be time-consuming. Looking back at the release notes for prior versions, they only list each version as bug fixes and security updates. I am hoping someone with more knowledge of the firmware versions can make an educated suggestion as to what version to use. I assume it would not be a good idea to go too far back in versions. I am really hoping that this is a firmware issue and not a hardware issue. Very frustrating having a useless $200 gaming router that is being out-performed by a $30 entry-level router. Thank you in advance as any help is appreciated.Solved21KViews1like12CommentsNETGEAR Nighthawk X10 R9000 - Firmware Update to Enable Dual WAN Port Bonding - LAG / LACP
Since DOCSIS 3.1 has been released in many markets (Cox, Comcast etc) in the US giving us the consumer options to upgrade to speeds greater to or equal to that of 1Gbps I would like to request to see if it would be possible for Netgear to create a Firmware Update that would give us the ability to Bond two WAN ports with LAG / LACP on the R9000, using the available LAN1 and LAN2 ethernet ports designated for Static LAG or LACP-IEEE 803.3ad. There are now many consumer grade DOCSIS 3.1 Modems that support this due to the fact that speeds are now at or above 1Gbps. In order to bypass the 1Gbps physical port bottle neck, this makes perfect sense. Just for the sake of naming a few modems that have this capability, here I name a few: Motorola MB8600, Arris CM8200, Arris SB8200. I'm sure Netgear will also release DOCSIS 3.1 cable modems that have WAN port bonding simply due to the new speeds of internet available to us via this medium.18KViews1like4CommentsStreaming/Browsing issue on C7000
Not sure what the issue here is. I have the 150MBps internet service from Comcast, and ethernet speed tests show I am getting it. What is bothering me, (and maybe its a Comcast issue) when my wife is doing a Facebook Live video for her work, using a cell phone or tablet connected to the 2.4GHz frequency. If I do something on my tablet or phone it will cause a disruption or weak signal to her stream. What bothers me about this, is I am connected to the 5GHz frequency. Could this potentially be a setting I screwed up in the modem? Or would this be on the Comcast Upload side? Thanks!2.6KViews0likes1CommentJitter issues via Orbi vs direct to modem
I recently replaced my Arris SB6190 modem with a Netgear CM600 due to the well publicized issues with jitter/latency on Intel's Puma 6 chipset that the SB6190 uses. One of the tools used to help diagnose this issue is here: http://www.dslreports.com/tools/puma6 Its essentially pinging a server on the internet but instead of using ICMP its using TCP. This is because some internet routers/etc block ICMP, or lower the priority of ICMP in favor of TCP/UDP. So a TCP test is more accurate. Anyways, if I am cabled directly into my Netgear CM600 modem I experience almost no jitter. For example, everything is tightly clustered around 35ms in this test: Compare that to test when my mac mini is cabled into the Orbi: The response time distribution isn't so neatly packed around 35ms - many responses are 2x that! Things I have tried: I downgraded router & both satellites to V1.4.0.18 from V1.4.0.34 - didn't help I made the mac mini the only client on the Orbi. I did this by removing power from both satellites and disabling both the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz radios on the router in the Advanced Wireless settings. I also unplugged a switch with more wired devices from the router. At this point my mac mini was the ONLY client listed in Orbi's management inteface - didn't help jitter issues at all. Anyone else seeing jitter problems with the Orbi? This is bad for gaming, VOIP, etc. - any latency sensitive applications. I did find this other thread where somoene mentioned periodic latency issues on their Orbi: https://community.netgear.com/t5/Orbi/Orbi-latency-peaks-every-10s/m-p/1200477SolvedC3000 ping issues
Recently, about every 20 minutes to an hour my ping will jump from around 30 to 600. If I restart the router/modem the ping will go back to normal, but not until then, so I know it is a problem with the C3000 and not something with my ISP. Also I get a large ping spike once around every 30 seconds where my ping will spike to 600 and then return again. I had this router/modem since May and it has just recently started doing this. Any idea for a solution?2.5KViews0likes1CommentNetgear R7000 and R8500 comparison for gaming
I'm considering to buy a new Router-only. I need it to have a very strong signal for a very large house and I want it to be specifically though for gaming (QoS, low lag etc...) And the worst issue I currently have is that when I'm gaming I have to ask everyone else in the house to avoid using the internet or I start lagging very high. So I would like the new router to mitigate this as much as possible! To compare the two I've used the comparison feature here: https://www.netgear.com/home/products/networking/wifi-routers/?cid=wmt_netgear_organic In the R700 I can see things like these that are not available in the R8500: Advanced features for lag-free gaming Upstream & downstream QoS for best gaming & video streaming experience Airtime fairness prevents network lag when slower devices connect I do not know what those features actually are and how effective they are for gaming. Also the R700 specifically talk about gaming while the R8500 doesn't. Can you tell me which of these is the best suited for gaming and why / how? (or if there are other models that are even better?) I'm aware there's a big price difference. I just want to get the best device I can for my two needs (WiFi for big house + best gaming experience possible) and I'm fairly ignorant of these things and need advice. Thank youSolved6.7KViews0likes13CommentsXWNB5201 installed and working, except..
I picked up the Powerline 500 + Wifi and installed it. Works great. TV connects and streams, no issue. The problem I have is with my iPhone/iPad. Connected with no issue. But as soon as I try to use anything on the phone via wifi (say, check email) it takes 2-4 minutes for the internet connection to work. If I continue to use the phone at that point (check social media etc) it will continue to work flawlessly. later in the day, rinse and repeat with the same results. Has anyone run into this?Solved2.2KViews0likes2Comments
