10 TopicsFeature request: provide true network segmentation for guest wifi
It would be great if you could improve the guest wifi capabilities, at least giving the option of complete network segmentation for guest networks on your routers. Visitors, and untrusted devices (e.g., IoT devices) should be able to connect to a separate SSID, on a (separate) VLAN (or other logical segmentation), so that guest devices can't discover, communicate with, or sniff traffic from, devices on the trusted SSID, except as explicitly permitted through user-created rules. Ideally, VLAN management should also extend to the ethernet ports on the router and satellites, so that wired devices can also be segmented out to the untrusted VLAN (e.g., wired IoT devices).8.1KViews25likes4CommentsQuestion on creating multiple Wireless VLANs for Security (IoT devices, Family WiFi, Guest WiFi)
Hey Everyone, I'm in the process of re-doing (re-designing) my entire Home Network. I've decided to go the VLAN route for both Wired and Wireless devices. From a security standpoint, I would like to have all of my IoT / Smart Devices (Amazon Echo's, Ring Doorbell Pro, etc., bla bla) on their own Wireless VLAN. I would also like to have a Wireless VLAN just for visiting friends/family/guests. Lastly, I would like to have a Wireless VLAN for the members of my immediate household. Ideally, I would like to create a specific VLAN for both Wireless and Wired devices, for my immediate household that is. Here is what I currently have in terms of hardware: 1. - I have an Orbi RBR50 w/ 2x Satellites. From what I can see, the Orbi Router seems to only support basic VLAN tagging. However, the ORBI does allow for you to create a 'Guest WiFi' and restrict users from even seeing/interacting with each other and etc. As weird as it may seem, my CenturyLink Fiber Modem seems to have more options for VLAN Management than the Orbi. 2. - I have 2x ZyXEL switches, a GS1900-8 (8-Port) and a GS1900-24E (24-Port). According to their specs they support the following VLAN/QoS specs: Traffic Management and QoS • Port-based VLAN • IEEE 802.1Q VLAN tagging • IEEE 802.3ad LACP • Guest VLAN • Voice VLAN • Storm control • IEEE 802.1p priority queues per port • IEEE 802.1p Queuing method (scheduler) • Input priority mapping • Rate limiting per port (ingress/ egress) • IEEE 802.3x flow control So that said, since I would like to do some VLAN Magic as stated above, is there a way to do this with the my current hardware? Or do I need to purchase additional hardware like an Netgear Router or a little EdgeRouterX or something? Also, I'm trying to understand...since I'm using the Orbi RBR50 w/ Two Satellites...I'm not sure how I can create additional WiFi VLANs without adding additional APs or other equipment? Any thoughts and recommendations welcome!! BJConnecting Seagate PersonalCloud to Orbi RBK30
Hi, I have a Seagate 3TB Personal Cloud that I'm trying to connect (wired, no wifi) to my Orbi router. However, it's not showing up on my network. VLAN/Bridge group is enabled due to my ISP's settings. Any ideas on how I can get the PersonalCloud device to connect? TIA.VLAN tag group VLAN ID edit
Please advise on how to change VLAN ID for Internet port (not port 1, 2, or 3) on Orbi. Edit function fails. Steps to reproduce: Advanced Setup - VLAN/Bridge Settings Check Enable VLAN/Bridge Group Check By VLAN tag group Check default Internet group (has VLAN ID 10) Edit, change ID to 201, apply. Change doesn’t stick, VLAN ID stays 10VLAN Tagging for Guest Network
I've seen a couple of posts about this in the past on this forum, but all of them appear to be kinda old, and before you could uncheck the "Allow Guests to see each other and access my local network" while in AP mode. Now it looks like you can uncheck that in the version of firmware that I have (1.11.0.20). I have my own router/DHCP/firewall/gateway that I want to keep using, so I have put my Orbi network into AP only mode. However, I would still like to have a guest network that I'm able to separate at my router. I would like to do this via VLAN tagging. So my questions are: Is this something that Orbi is capable of now? If not, is this something that will be available in the future? And if so, is there a way to be notified when it is available? What actually happens when you uncheck "Allow Guests to see each other and access my local network" while in AP only mode? Does the Orbi just start NAT'ing and serving it's own DHCP at that point? Lastly, assuming that it's not already a thing, I would like to chime in with others here and say that I would REALLY like to see VLAN tagging as an option in the advanced interface.Prosafe Plus Switches/VLAN Config
I am running a using a JGS516PE - 16-Port Gigabit ProSAFE Plus Switch with POE. I have it set up at a satellite office. The setup consists of a internet modem to watchguard router to the switch. I want to setup a voice vlan on the router. 192.168.25.0. VLAN 20. One question is can I call it 20 or do I need to use a single digit. The second question is. So here is my scenerio. I have phones and computers sharing the same lan cable. It goes from switch to phone to computer. What is my configuration of the ports so that the switch will route the phone traffic to VLAN 20 and keep the DAta traffic on VLAN 10. How do I set this up.2.5KViews0likes1CommentOrbi vlan + wireless printer via usb
Will the USB port on the Orbi router or Orbi sattelite support wireless printing via plugged in printer very soon? Also why does the Orbi not support vLAN tagging out of the box, which has me hoping this also is coming very soon, the Nighthawk range supports both. I'd like to use Orbi as primary router with Vodafone Fibre an currently it's current setup is capped by these limitations.Orbi Respect vLAN Settings
Hello All. I am not seeing the Orbi respect per client vLAN tagging. For instance I have a Meraki MX-100 Firewall\Router. One of the things I can do there is to tag clients with a group policy that then will apply a specific vLAN. For instance, I have 3 vLANs, 1 is my personal network, a second is the VPN to the office, the third is for IoT devices. If I put a policy to my cell phone that should put me on my work network, it appears to apply from the Meraki side, however it is stil only getting an IP on the same vLAN as the orbi. Appears that the Orbi isn't respecting the vLAN settings. Anyone else successfully used vLANs on the switch side and then apply them to the Orbi connected clients?Am I right in assuming that the R7800 DOES NOT support Vlan amd ONT connections
Just purchased the R7800 and I cant see anyway to configure Vlan in advanced settings. Looks as if I bought a pup, not made clear in the specs. I assumed R7000 meant the series. bye bye netgear foreverSolved8.3KViews0likes5CommentsXAVB5201, GS105E, and VLAN's
I just wanted to post this in hopes someone else might find it useful. I had a network installation for a business in a historic old house. As such, we were not allowed to drill holes and run CAT5e without going through a long committee approval process. But at the same time I needed a way to run the cable company Internet feed from the entry point in the basement, up to the ground floor to the FVS318N firewall, and then post-firewall back downstairs to a basement office. Initially I tried doing this via 802.11gn wireless, but the floors kept interfering with the signal and causing drop outs and wildly variant connection speeds. So I purposed to employ a new & better solution (if I could) ... powerline. So I purchased 2 XAVB5201 kits (4 total units) and deployed them at each location needing network access. I also reset the factory security key on each unit. As I only needed 3 actual locations, I then deployed 3 GS105E ProSafe Plus switches. I configured the switches to have 2 VLAN's each using the Advanced 802.1Q feature; one for the raw unfiltered Internet feed, and one for the post-firewall filtered feed. It took a few notes and some restarts to get it configured just right, but the final install works flawlessly. By using the Advanced 802.1Q feature in the GS105E's I'm able to establish VLAN's and assign ports and PVID's to each of the affected ports on the switch. Also, because I configured all 3 switches to "see" both networks even if they don't participate per se I can "see" all three switches from a management workstation using the ProSafe Plus Utility AND also "see" all the powerline devices using the Netgear PowerLine Utility. An elegant solution to an in-elegant world. Post question if you wish and I'll try to answer. :)12KViews0likes2Comments
