  • Since the Orbi is a piece of garbage that will drop your connection continuously, I'd vote for any other product other than this one.  I wish I had never purchased mine.

Fortunately, the Orbi works great in my household and doesn't "drop my connection continuously."

Orbi is an awesome product, simply the best Wi-Fi I have ever owned in over 25 years using the internet.

I was an early adopter to Orbi and the internet may not be available was so annoying I had to buy the gen 2 EERO Pro Set a few weeks back. No more random drops, just a solid connection in all corners of my home. The Orbi is now a $350 doorstop. Get your sh$£ together Netgear, this products firmware needs alot of work. Stability 1st
  • Hi,

Regarding performance and coverage I must say that Im impressed so far.

  • Just got RKB53 Costco system and installed with breeze. Have full throttle connection in entire house with router in basement and two sat on 1st and 2nd floor. It came with firmware version 1.8X and working fine. I see too many people having issue after v2 upgrade. It wonders me if should I upgrade to v2x or leave it alone untile Netgear comes up with stable firmware?

I also bought an RBK53 from Costco and it came with firmware version 1.4.x, with which I had absolutely no issues. After several weeks, more or less, I noticed that the system had auto-upgraded to v2.0.0.74 and I was initially concerned. However, I have had zero issues with this latest firmware version; it's been perfectly stable in my case.

After you guys have had your Orbi's for a while, you'll find that you have no choice about upgrading your firmware. The Orbi auto-flashes the latest firmware eventually. It may take several days, but it will happen. I'm not personally happy with this, but at the moment I'm using the 2.0.0.76 Beta (which I manually flashed), and that's working really well for me. As did 2.0.0.74, but the wireless signal strength on the 2.0.0.76 Beta seems a little stronger here. So I'm not really upset about the lack of control over the firmware version at the moment, but the time may come :-).

If there is one thing I could change about the system, that would be it = allow users to disable firmware auto-updates. I imagine that would be a relatively simple option to add to the firmware and the default could be set to "enable".

  • I have had so many service interruptions (seems to be caused by the satellite) that when the Orbi misbehaves my computers that are wired to the cable modem/router (Netgear C3700) can't get access to the Internet. If I take the satellite out of the picture, the Orbi main unit behaves fairly normally....although I don't get the range.

The bottom line is I am so fed up with dealing with this I got a Google Wifi with 3 nodes, it works perfectly, great range....not quite as fast as the Orbi (when the Orbi works which is about 75% of the time).

I am hoping I can get Netgear to RMA the whole package so I can sell it on eBay, becuase I have zero faith in Netgear fixing it.

Yep, that's a common problem people have around here.  It's not the performance when it works, but the stability.  The Google Wifi is much slower, but rock stable from what I read.

  • If the Orbi was even remotely reliable and did what Netgear says it should then I'd say "great". But since the product doesn't deliver reliable wifi regardless of setting, firmware revision, placement and more, this post is rubbish, because what use is speed if you only get wifi part-time? Orbi is junk. I'm so annoyed at Netgear for not doing the right thing, which would be to take these boat anchors back and provide a refund, that one part of me would like to see a class action lawsuit against Netgear for delivering such an expensive piece of junk that is not fit for purpose.

I set up my friends Orbi couple of months ago. Been solid and he's happy with it. No wifi or connection issues:

  • Still using the eero, has been very reliable, and it is performing well. I've added MoCA 2.0 to connect each of the two remote nodes, which gives me a "hard-wired" equivalent backhaul. Also makes the wireless about as fast as the Orbi was. Actually, just a touch faster since I was using wireless backhaul on the Orbi. Have experienced several more automatic firmware upgrades, all went well, enjoying the added features.

Since I've switched from cable TV to streaming TV on the internet in the last couple of months, it's even more important to me to have a reliable network. The eero has been great in that regard. The Orbi is gathering dust at this point, unfortunately, so it goes.
