RBK50 Download Speed Issues

Just installed the RBK50 with Satellite. Running V2.3.5.30. Discovered a strange issue. If I run a speed test from my ATT modem (Fiber 1000), I get 900+ up and 900+ down. When I run the speed test from the Orbi web ui, I get 900+ up, but only about 500 down. Any idea why this would happen?

What is the Mfr and model# of the ISP modem the NG router is connected too?

    Modem Combo Units:
This would be a double NAT condition which isn't recommended. https://kb.netgear.com/30186/What-is-Double-NAT
    Couple of options,
    1. Configure the modem for transparent bridge mode. Then use the Orbi router in router mode. You'll need to contact the ISP for help and information in regards to the modem being bridged correctly.
    2. If you can't bridge the modem, disable ALL wifi radios on the modem, configure the modems DMZ/ExposedHost or IP Pass-Through for the IP address the Orbi router gets from the modem. Then you can use the Orbi router in Router mode.
    3. Or disable all wifi radios on the modem and connect the Orbi router to the modem, configure AP mode on the Orbi router. https://kb.netgear.com/31218/How-do-I-configure-my-Orbi-router-to-act-as-an-access-point and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7LOcJ8GdDo&app=desktop

Try option 3 if you have a modem with a built in router...

How did you get  V2.3.5.30.   There are numerous reports of problems with this FW.  Do a search. If the FW was installed auto as a NEW install see if you can find (downloads) a older version.

I do not know how I got that version of firmware. It showed up in the app and I updated...

But my point is you DID NOT have to update

I found that at least for my 50 series, there seems to be a proble in FW, both old and recent in regards to the WAN to LAN not achieving anything near 900Mbps:

    https://community.netgear.com/t5/Orbi/Orbi-RBR50-is-not-supporting-900Mb-on-the-WAN-to-LAN-test/m-p/1770816/highlight/true#M64990

There have been mixed reports of some that are seeing near 900Mbps on the WAN to LAN side. Not sure if this is a HW issue or FW issue me and others who do see this. For speeds to achive anything near 900Mbps, HW NAT accelleration or Cut-Through is needed.

AP mode should result in seeing near 900Mbps.

    Issue was reported to NG.

  • Classically, after I submitted this post, the site recommended another related topic. It mentioned an issue with the ATT modem that prevented Orbi from getting max throughput through the ethernet port on the modem. And that's the weird thing. I can consistently get 900+ mbps upload speed. Every test. My download is always 500-ish mbps. So I called ATT, ran through the usual troubleshooting script only to have the tech tell me that they are sending a new modem. That will be here in 2 days. You guys will have to wait until then to see if I resolve this.

Other than this, I've only had a few other weird things pop up, but I'll wait to troubleshoot all of that after I switch out my ATT box.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. I'll keep you posted.

  • So the new ATT router didn't help things (although the BGW210 IP Passthrough is so much nicer to setup than DMZPlus). Still getting 900+ mbps up (Great!), but only about 500mbps down (Boo!).

I've thought of trying to set the ethernet interfaces to gig-full instead of autonegotiating to see if that works, but I don't see those options on the Netgear.

I've also run into strange connectivity problems. Every once in a while, I just lose internet connectivity. It seems like DNS stop resolving, but it's been a big enough headache that I just shut the Orbis down and am now running off the ATT router directly.

So, I want to give this one more good try. What would you recommend I do to get these running smoothly? I can figure out the ATT weirdness another time.

Change the ATT modem back to router mode then configure the RBR for AP mode. You should see better speeds in AP mode.

        NOT with V2.3.5.30
