RBR 50 going offline / Where to start troubleshooting?

Hi All,

I am hoping someone can help with our Netgear RBR50 Mesh system going offline continually (wired or WiFi). My two sick kids are hoping for a resolution even more!

With laptop plugged into the Arris 1602 modem directly the internet is quick and reliable. When I have the modem plugged into the RBR50 it connects and provides internet access but only for a short time.

I have tried booting just the router alone (with satellite off), same issue.

I tried defaulting the unit to factory settings and reconfigured, no change.

I saw one post about unchecking DST time and adding an NTP address, that did not help.

It is currently running Firmware Version 2.7.4.24.

Any other suggestions on what to try next? Thank you all.

  • What happens if its just the router? Leave the satellites disconnected

Did you try a factory reset and reinstall? (not from a backup)

      Hey Plemans,

Thank you for such a quick reply. I mentioned both of those in the original post with no luck unfortunately.

I tried with just the router (and no satellites on) = no good.

I tried factory resetting and configuring from scratch = no good.

I can watch several pings drop out and the app shows RBR50 offline.

  • Additional information:

We have had issues with our modem going offline. I contend it is at the tap as it is only when its rainy/windy. After many visits the technician swapped my old reliable Arris TM1602A yesterday with an Optimum Altice modem/router combo. I know that doesn't jive well with the Orbi; and it was terrible.

So I drove to the Optimum store and requested a standalone Arris last night. The only model they had was a 1602 (Docsis 3.0). Once it was configured last night it has been steady, no issues with it.

Are there any compatibility issues with a basic Arris modem?

  • Another update:

I checked in with my ISP to confirm there were no compatibility or configuration issues with my Arris TM1602A and the Netgear Orbi RBR50, there were none.

I also read another post where the gentlemen with an RBR20 (and same modem) had the exact same issues. He discovered that his problems were resolved by replacing the power supply for the router. I tried swapping router power supply with now unused satellite power supply. No change. I have no other way of knowing if there are problems with my power adapters.

Router still dropping offline and losing internet connection.

If I am on my phone, say for example, watching a youtube video I can see the ping on my laptop drop out (both wired and wireless to RBR50). As soon as that happens the video on my phone stops playing. See attached.

At what point do I tap out with this unit and purchase something new?

What is a good replacement model for 2800 sq ft (2 story)?

Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

      Hello AerialAssault23,

      Welcome to the NETGEAR Community!

I understand that you are experiencing network connectivity issues with the devices connected to your Orbi system and that these issues do not happen when you are connected directly to your ISP router. This could be an issue caused by double NAT. Please change your Orbi mode to AP to resolve this issue.

Hi Kevin. Thank you for the reply. The modem is a standalone, no other router is involved here. I requested that modem purposefully so I didn't have any double NAT issues.
So this fix doesn't apply here, right?
