RBR40 router into a permanent boot loop, where the top LED will glow white

I have an RBR40 Router, with two satellites, RBS40.  My system has always worked fine, and always accepted firmware updates with no issue. Until 5/30, when the system tried to update my router and satellites to version 2.7.4.24. This update caused major problems with my entire home:

1. This update bricks the router. It will place the RBR40 router into a permanent boot loop, where the top LED will glow white, just like it's going to reboot, but never actually does.

     As a result:

          a. You cannot initiate a new setup, as the wifi won't connect to the router, even when using the QR Code.

          b. It appears to disable the ethernet ports as well, so you cannot even connect using the URL or orbilogin . com as                usual.

          c. As a result, the only option is a carefully timed restore of the previous firmware, through tftp, which is not                          exactly easy to do.

2. This update works fine on the satellites, but unfortunately since the versions don't match the router, this removes the ability to monitor and manage devices on both the app and the router site.

Thankfully, the community articles were very helpful, and I was finally able to get the router to accept the previous firmware and restore the previous version to the RBR40 router.

I'm hoping that if Netgear is going to remove the ability to block updates, then please ensure to quickly fix the published versions that you send over the air.

A fix for this current version, 2.7.4.24, would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

How was v.24 applied to the RBR when you first updated? Auto update or Orbi app?

It's recommended that you manually load v.24 on to the RBR using a web browser and wired PC. After the RBR has process the FW file and is back to ready, power OFF the RBR for 1 minute then back ON. Should be good from here...

Initially it did take it automatically. I tried the manual update before but I will try it the way you said, update then what, give it 5 minutes then power off?
  • I've had the same thing happen to me. Woke up this morning and the internet wouldn't work. Tried to go to the web browser UI (my device uses 10.0.0.1) and couldn't even get the login prompt to appear. After finding some instructions to do the cold reboot and waited quite awhile it finally started working again. I thought maybe there was a problem with my current firmware so I went and did the auto upgrade and the same thing happened again.

Tried to install the update using auto again not realizing it was the upgrade that was the problem, had the same thing happen and had to go through the same long process again. Tried installing the update manually thinking maybe it was an issue with the auto install and it happened a third time. Did the soft reset (or whatever you call it) again and I'm finally back to V2.7.3.22 and I don't want to touch V2.7.4.24 with a 10 foot pole.

How is this still an issue 5 and a half months later? I suppose after I did the manual install I didn't wait for it to fully load and then do the shutdown for 1 minute, but I'm very wary to attempt it again since I don't want to potentially have to wait a long time to get it to revert back to 2.7.3.22 if it doesn't work yet again (never tried reverting using tftp, so I'd have to research that). So, I would again call for a working version of 2.7.4.24 since it's ridiculous that this is still a problem almost 6 months later.

    Using RBR40, V2.7.3.22 => V2.7.4.24 on Windows 10 machine

As an additional update, I tried the Manual Update through the Web Interface, let the Orbi get fully loaded, turned it off for more than 5 minutes and still had the same issue. Had to reset and it eventually reverted to the previous FW version. So this is definitely still an existing problem if anyone from Netgear is paying attention.

  • Thank you for replying Kevin,

Why do I need to update the satellites first if I may ask? The OP said he did that first and he was never able to successfully get the new version installed and since he updated the satellites first the version mismatch made him lose functionality. So why is that necessary please?

The instructions you sent are exactly what I did (twice) but neither time the router was able get out Factory default state, even after trying what was suggested to let it fully load and turn it off for at least a minute.

I confirmed that I am using the proper file for the manual update. After unzipping the filename is "RBR40-V2.7.4.24.img", so unless it's the wrong file with the right label then I did use the correct Firmware update file.

Lastly, did the OP (ILP) delete the reply he made on 2022-11-20 11:14 PM because I still have the email that was sent to me with his post, and yes he had some critical things to say, but so far what he said is still valid, so I'm curious if his post was censored, or if he voluntarily removed it somehow (I don't see any options to remove my posts, so this seems unlikely)

Thank you for any guidance you can provide.

      Hello Armage17 ,

Thank you for providing that information!

The satellites are suggested to be updated first to mitigate incompatibility errors with the router during the firmware upgrade process. Since you followed the update process as it is recommended, I would like to endorse you to our support team.
