Serious connectivity bug with RBR20-V2.6.1.38 firmware

I recently upgraded my RBR20 to the RBR20-V2.6.1.38 firmware (from RBR20-V2.5.1.16). After the upgrade I was no longer able to connect to my NAS, which is connected via ethernet directly to the router.  After reverting back to RBR20-V2.5.1.16 the connection issue went away. Not being able to connect to all devices in the local network is a serious bug.

In my set-up the NAS is directly connected to an Asus Router via ethernet. The RBR20 is running in AP mode and is also connected to the ASUS router via ethernet. I have 3 RBS20 satellites. Connection to the NAS sometimes worked (when using RBR20-V2.6.1.38) with  when connected to the RBR20, it did not work, when the laptop was connected via a RBS20.

FYI, there is another bug when the RBR20 checks for the latest firmware. After downgrading to  RBR20-V2.5.1.16 the Firmware Update page of the RBR20 router shows correctly that the firmware version is V2.5.1.16, but it also states that "No new firmware version available.", which is clearly incorrect.

How and why did you upgrade to the bad version?

  • I did a manual upgrade using the latest RBR20 and RBS20 FW from the Netgear site. I did the upgrade because my understanding is that the version I was using has some security issues that have been fixed in the latest version. Pick your poison.

Did you try a factory reset and setup after you updated the FW?

      Ok

According to netgear IF the security issue was as you state they would have pushed the update to you no action on your part.   But as all things in life it's your choice.  I would question your security info source

  • I did the upgrade in response to an email sent out on 12/27/20 by NETGEAR Security <security@e.netgear.com> titled "Important Security Firmware Update from NETGEAR" recommending to upgrade the firmware of the RBR20  The email said "We've Enhanced Your Product's Security. Please Update to the Latest Firmware.". Usually it is very advisable to follow such recommendations, if they come directly from the vendor.

I did not do a factory reset after the upgrade. Usually that is not requird unless explicitly stated in the upgrade instructions.

A reset maybe need to ensure the FW and new configuration in place. Some newer FW versions may not work well with older configurations. Up to you though.

Thanks.    You're right it is advisable as you say.  Now if it would work as advertised life would be great
