Any known issues with the new MR6150 or the MR6550?

I'm looking at taking the plunge with the M6 hotspots but am concerned with all of the issues related to the AT&T version MR6500.  Does anyone know of any of the same issues (Overheating, dropping service, no firmware updates) with the Netgear branded line of Hotspots?  The MR6550 is out of my price range, but the MR6150 may be doable.

How is firmware updates being handled with these Netgear branded devices?  I know that the AT&T version MR6500 had to be on the AT&T network to get an update, but since these are designed to be unlocked to any one network, who would be providing the updates for these devices?  Provider?  Netgear?

  • Good update.  Let us know how it works over the long haul.

  • I've go the MR6150. all my updates have been pushed to it. Netgear sends the updates to ATT (mine's locked to att) and from there I get the updates. Not sure exactly how it works with unlocked units.

I thought that all MR6150's are unlocked for use on any system.  How is yours "locked" to AT&T?  Can't you put in a T-Mobile SIM card and use their system?

The upgrades will be released by Netgear. The next upgrade is coming soon to support the Verizon certification so that the device can be used with Verizon BYOD plans.

    Thanks

Thank you for your response. Assuming that this is true for both the MR6550 and the MR6150 models as they are both branded through Netgear.

I've pretty much given up on the MR6500 as this isn't a true T-Mobile compatible device since it doesn't support all of the frequency bands even in unlocked mode.  I'm also very concerned about its stability issues and the lack of being able to update firmware without an AT&T active account.  I'm hoping that the MR6150 is more stable than the MR6500 but waiting to see how reviews come in before I make the plunge.  Spending this kind of money on a questionable product just doesn't make sense to me.  Really wish Netgear would get a handle on the issues before you loose reputation.

Still looking to see if any of the MR6150 or MR6550's are having issues?  Really focused on the MR6150 as the extra features of the MR6550 aren't needed in my case.

  • I have both.  Im really not impressed with the Mr6550 . Got it do the it supposedly having 5g carrier aggregation.  At home at times the 6550 will give me a 200 mbps increase.  But for most of the day it will get about the same speeds.  200 mbps download.   I do tend to see a better upload seed on the 6550 which is aroun 8 to 15  as compared to 1 to 2 on the 6150. Also i tend to notice that if i drive to the tower down the road a mile away i will get 800 mbps downloads and 100 mbps  uploads on the 6150 but for some reason cant figure out i only will get about 400 mbps on the 6550 and 100 to 150  mbs uploads.  Ive tried chaning my by band list making new list and still cant get the downloads to increase.  So proably will return it.  It probably something in the way they have the band priority list or the carrier aggregation list set , which i cant seem to get access to yet.

Good information.  I'm assuming that you're not having any other connectivity issues.  So many issues reported on the locked versions of the MR6500 and MR6110 that it's got me very gun shy with Netgear equipment.

If I end up getting a Netgear hotspot, I think the MR6150 is the best bet.  Offers flexibility between networks and features like external antenna and Ethernet.  Right now, I have an Inseego X Pro 5G MiFi M3000 that's tied to T-Mobile but I'm open to a more universal product of the same caliber.  I would like the flexibility to go between AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile with just the change of a SIM card.  I just don't want to pick up a bad design that's forever having issues with firmware and overheating problems.

For the performance differences between MR6150 and MR6550, I think you are using the same SIM card when you do the comparison.

Could you please help to capture the model.json files on the 2 devices with the same SIM card and send email to me at jopeng@netgaer.com? I will check what cause the performance differences. Please mention your community id in the email.

      Thanks

Mr6550 updated to a new firmware and know its getting equal speed of the other unit.
