Connection issues with new swicth, Help please ! GS105 Prosafe

Good evening all ! I'm wondering if anyone has had this issue or could perhaps point me in the right direction please.
I've just purcahsed a Netgear Prosafe GS105 switch for my home network to replace an old TP-link switch.
My current set up is as follows.... ROUTER to CAT6 Wall jack to CAT6 Wall jack to Netgear GS105 Switch, They are all connected with either cat6 or cat5e patch cables.
When connecting the patch lead to the switch it doesnt light up or recognise any connection ? but it will recognise a connection if i plug in directly from my router ?
I have been using this method with my older tp-link switch for months without any issues, is there any resonable explaination for this or am i being daft ?

Many thanks in advance !

Thanks for your detailed reply Hopchen, the faceplates in the walls have been wired as "straight through" I have used a cable tester to test between the 2 rooms and the results have come back as ok.
Ive been doing a little more reading into the cables though... In your opinion would it matter what i use between the router - faceplate and the switch ?
I'm currently using straight through patch cables from the router to the faceplate then into the switch. would it make any difference if i were to use crossover cable ?

      Many thanks

        Hi again,

As you know, the issue is that when you patch your house with cabling, the Auto MDI/MDI-X might have issues working. In that case, you need ensure you are using correct cables for connecting devices.

I would keep it simple. Your house is cabled as straight through. So, do the same between router and faceplate. Use a standard straight through cable. Even do the same between the faceplate and the switch. See if the Auto MDI/MDI-X works (i.e. you see LED activity on the ports). If not, then simply swap the cable between the faceplate and the switch to a cross-over instead.

I hope that makes sense :)

        Cheers

  • I actually just had that sort of thing happen as I was trying to trouble shoot something else a few min ago.

I hooked up my cable tester and found that pair 6 wasn't good. I don't know how it died considering the cable hasn't moved in a year???

If you have a cable tester try that. Otherwise you can try different wall to device patch cables. If that has no effect pull the wall plate out and see if you can put new ends on or repunch it.
