Assuming that the newly "vacated" port works with another machine, I would be tempted to say it's not a switch issue.
What you're describing is quite unusual, among other reasons, because the switch will "associate" (or store in it's address table) the MAC address of a host connected to a port with the very first packet sent by that host, so, for what you describe to be correct, the switch should disconnect that host literally within seconds of it being connected, so that you would never actually see it connected.
