Help Required - Netgear GS724Tv3 duplex issue

Hi there

Wondered if someone could advise if my switch is faulty or if its a known issue.

I picked up one of these switches yesterday, installed it onto the network, and was able to login to the management page ok. Now its a new install and ive not changed or touched any of the settings so its on full auto settings.

The problem im facing is we have a 80/20 internet connection with 10 machines on the network, all using the same spec etc.

Before with our old 10/100 switch the internet connection worked and there were no issues.

The new GS724Tv3 is having major duplex issues. If I force 100 full duplex the internet connection (through various tests on all machines but testing one at a time) is reduced to 10/20

If I force 1000 full duplex I get 80 on the down but 10 on the up ?

Ive tried playing around with forcing various duplex settings that work and none give me the correct 80/20 on our internet bandwidth compared to a cheap £30 switch, that requires no configuring, and works out the box.

Note: when tests are run I do it with 1 machine powered on and nothing else running in the background, all machines tested individually with nothing else powered on all have the same issue.

As I have only just bought the switch I do have 7 days to return it, I wouldn't usually bother with a managed switch but its the only one my local vendor had in stock at the time.

Is it just a rubbish switch ? or do I need to change a setting ?

MOD NOTE: I registered my device through the netgear interface, however im away at the moment, so don't have access to the details but its registered with netgear under the same email address I used to register to the forums today.

  • As a general rule, network switches have little to no impact on internet speeds, which is what I assume you're complaining about - also as a general rule duplex settings can be allowed to auto-negotiate, forcing a given setting almost always results in a problem.

So - what makes you the problem is related to the duplex settings, and which connection specifically are you forcing to full duplex and why?

To answer your question - I've used the G2724T (not certain which version) and several other Netgear switches, I've found them (again in general) to be adequate performers and use them in several client networks where I cannot justify the cost of a Cisco switch - I should point out here that a GS724 is not a managed switch, but a "SmartSwitch" in that it's management capabilities are limited.
