How to use the Fibre links on GS748T switches

Hi,

I have two GS748T switches at opposite ends of the bulding. Currently they are linked via a fibre cable and two Fast Ethernet Bridge coverters (one at each end). These converters are only 100base, so I am considering replacing them with 100/1000base models. The cost of upgrading these converters is around £100, but would I bet better off using the built in SFP ports on the Netgear switches?

If the SFP ports are the best option, what do I need to allow me to plug in the exisiting fibre cable? Some form of SFP adapter perhaps - but which one?

    Hello MalcTRMG,

    Welcome to the community!

I understand you are looking for SFP adapters for your switches to replace your ethernet bridge converters, let me help you with that. If the units that you have are v1's the compatible modules are the following:

NETGEAR AGM731F 1000BASE-SX SFP GBIC Module with LC connectors for 50um or 62.5um multi-mode fiber cable.

NETGEAR AGM732F Fiber 1000BASE-LX SFP GBIC Module with LC connectors for 9um single-mode fiber cable.

For higher hardware versions of the switches, please see this FAQ

    Thanks,

      Thanks John,

Are there any advatages to using SFP adapters instead ethernet bridge converters?

        Hi MaIcTRMG,

I would say the biggest advantage of using SFP modules is they don't require external power, they get power from the switch they're plugged into. Another thing is their size, 5-10x smaller compared to media converters. But SFP modules are fixed for their purpose, for example if its Multimode you can only use it on Multimode not like some Media Converters which can support both. There are some things to consider, so it will depend on your network requirements.

I hope that answers your question.

        Thanks,
