IEEE 802.3x Pause Frames - Receiving, but not Transmitting
I have enabled IEEE 802.3x Symmetric Flow Control on Ports 21 and 22 of a M7100-24X switch. When running "show interfaces status" from the CLI, Ports 0/21 and 0/22 indicate Flow Control Status "Acti...

Hello tjgoodma,
Welcome to the community!
Yes, you are correct "Symmetric Flow Control" allows the switch to both respond to and generate MAC control PAUSE frames. May I please know what firmware is your M7100-24X is running?
Looking forward to your response.
Thanks,

Hi JohnRo,
Thanks for the reply.
My firmware was out-of-date, but I just upgraded it to 11.0.0.18. I confirmed that the update was successful. The Web GUI looks slightly different and I was able to re-apply my Flow Control configurations on ports 21 & 22.
I'm still not seeing any Pause frames being transmitted. Here are some traces from the CLI after running for a while:
(M7100-24X) (Config)#show flowcontrol
Flow Control Flow Control RxPause TxPause
Intf Oper Mode
------- ------------ ------------ -------- --------
[deleted ports 0/1 thru 0/20]
0/21 Active Symmetric 0 0
0/22 Active Symmetric 128010 0
0/23 Active Symmetric 0 0
0/24 Active Symmetric 0 0

--------- ---------------- ---------------- ---------------- ---------------- ----------------
0/21 54534328704 3049 0 0 0
0/22 6057600 0 0 0 0
[0/21 InOctets is very large, InUcastPkts is very small...but InDropPkts=0?]
Port OutOctets OutUcastPkts OutMcastPkts OutBcastPkts OutDropPkts
--------- ---------------- ---------------- ---------------- ---------------- ----------------
0/21 23056 0 164 135 0
0/22 72132066895 33303830 237 205 0
[lots of traffic obviously making it out to 0/22, coming from 0/21]
As a follow-on question, is the Port 21 device required to use Auto-Negotiation to tell the switch that it's capable of symmetric flow control (receiving Pause Frames), or should the Flow Control setting in the Netgear switch be enough to turn on Pause Frame transmission to 0/21? I'm NOT using Auto-Negotiation in either the Port 21 or Port 22 devices.
Thanks,
tjgoodma

Hi tjgoodma,
Sorry for not getting back to you right away. Can you try reversing the source and destination and then try the test again. See if we'll get an rx pause on the new interface.
Thanks,
