Thanks for the link to the discovery tool. It took 5 attempts to find the switch. It was on a different address to the default (and the one in my bookmarks). Not actually sure what's at that address. I'm in now, with 'password' and can modify from the default configuration.

Most likely DHCP assigned e.g. from your DHCP server, typically your router - this is the default after a factory reset The default IP address is only active if no DHCP address is assigned (or a static IP is in place).
Multiple attempts (repeated) tell me there might be a issue on your L2 network, cumbersome L2 bridges (wired or wireless) or switches in the data path, or there is a lot of Broadcast traffic.
