Looking to use M-series switches for Dante audio and NDI video. Anything I should worry about?
Hello,
I'm an AV Integrator and am looking to use Netgear for this project. Here's what I'm thinking:
- The main switch will be a M4300-28G. This switch will have several NDI (not NDI-HX) devices (maybe 6) as well as a Dante connection to an audio console.
- There is a portable video desk that will have an M4200 switch. This switch is perfect since it offers POE+ and also has multi-gig ports for computers (if needed) and it will be 10G linked to the M4300.
- There's a portable audio desk that will have an M4100 switch. This audio desk just has a few ports for another Dante console. This would be 1G uplinked to the M4300. The only other devices on this switch would be a computer for management and/or Dante recording.
I saw some older posts regarding some M4300 problems with Dante. Have these been resolved with a firmware update? Is the M4100 suitable for Dante audio?
Just looking at spec sheets alone, I don't see any reasons why the above configuration won't work. Thanks!

Hi muzicman82
Thank you so much for your message. You're all set!
The M4300 series has been greatly enhanced and now fully approved for Dante Audio (mDNS management, DSCP trust and priorities, etc.). For your main switch, please just follow the configuration here and make sure you are using the latest firmware:
https://kb.netgear.com/000060205/M4300-Configuration-Guide-for-Dante-Audio-Devices
Latest firmware: https://www.netgear.com/support/product/m4300.aspx#download
Your setup looks fine, NDI is heavy mDNS traffic and M4300 is also certified there. VLAN 1 is optimized for NDI already with NETGEAR IGMP Plus enabled with default configuration, if you are using a different VLAN please just enable IGMP Plus on that other VLAN as well.
Please let us know of any questions, there is a great team of Pro AV professionals at NETGEAR for all network design and network configuration questions on M series, they can reached at ProAV.Design@netgear.com anytime.
Last for your M4100, yes that will work with Dante Audio, please make sure you follow the M4300 configuration guide and replicate the DCSP Trust and the DSCP priorities the same. As long as you don't overscribe the 1G uplink to the M4300 that should be fine. There is no specific Bonjour enablement on M4100, but default IGMP settings (same as M4300) should work. Please let us know if any issue there as well.
I hope this helps,
Regards

Thanks LaurentMa ! This is great info.
I'm not new to Dante/NDI networking but havne't used the M series for this application. I've configured the GS/JGS for smaller Dante or Q-SYS environments before.
As far as the M4100 use goes, I can't imagine needing more than the 1G link since it's just a single Dante device hanging on it...
