M4100-50G used to replace my GPON ONT
Good day,
I have a speed question for you today !
I want to replace my isp gpon ont with a dedicated Pfsense virtual machine.
I have setup a dedicated vlan (35-used by Bell Canada) using port 47-50 to accomodate the wan portion of the setup. FTTH goes into a MA5671A gpon (https://www.huawei.com/ucmf/groups/public/documents/webasset/hw_415752.pdf) into the port 47 and my router vm is connected to a ethernet port 48.
pppoe is handled by the vm connected to the port 48 and another ethernet nic is connected to another vlan of the switch for the lan portion (vlan 1 - port 1 to 46).
The setup is working flawlessly but I have a performance question...
With that setup in place, I dont get speeds as good as with the gpon ont provided by the isp (http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest) :
My isp is providing 1gbps up / 1gbps down. I could test it and confirm those speeds using the ont they provided when testing it :
Now the speed tests are done from the vm appliance (not any lan ports so I don't think the issue comes from the vlan1 portion.) my vm is having plenty of ressources and is running with around 1% cpu load - ram.
So I'm asking you these questions before I go any further with purchasing other accessories :
-I know that the MA5671A can provide 1.25/2.25gbs but can the switch handle that speed ?
-Based on the previous question, should I buy 2 MA5671A to connect them to the port 48 and the other one to my host ?
-My host has a HP NC523SFP card that support 2 x10Gbe. Should I buy another model of sfp to accomodate 10gbe ? (but again, will the m4100-50g will be able to handle it ?)
I know that ethernet might be my limitation but has you see, with the device they provide, I can get 950mbps up/down steady. (tested using their device with a workstation connected on the ethernet lan ports of it...)
You could also ask why I want to get rid of their device right ! That's because they don't allow bridge mode and also because they have full control on the unit remotely....
Any help appreciated :)

Hi tlex,
Welcome to our community! :)
The bandwidth that you have is 1GBp/s and it translates to .125Gbp/s of throughput. This speeds can still handle by the M4100-50G even on the Gigabit Ethernet ports. It is not recommended to use 3rd party modules in our switches. I suggest, you check our own accessories for your M4100.
