Hi Marto,
Just to report I have solved my initial problems but am losing confidence because the switch does not behave by the book!!!

I was able to connect to it on the bench using USB port and with no network connections either to the switch or the laptop I was using to manage the switch.

The device would not accept the "clear config" command but I could run ezconfig and show network. When I tried to set the desired fixed address using ezconfig I still received the same error message so something must have been retained in a cache which I could not clear.

I then did a hard reset using the front panel button and hoped this would put the machine into DHCP enabled mode. When I plugged into my lan however, it did not obtain a DHCP address or have the the factory default address. Instead I found that the original address which had caused the error messages still worked. This was fortunate as I could then try again with the web control pages.

I enabled the DHCP mode and did a soft factory reset. This has at last worked and the switch has a DHCP address which also shows correctly on the system management page.

No idea what was going on but now will try and set up my VLANs. Thanks again for your help.
