GS308E Not in range/No IP Address

Hello,

My new switch doesn't seem to be getting an IP Address, I have followed the instructions for installation but nothing. This is the correct device as the MAC address is the same. Any advice would be gratefully received?

  • Is there a DHCP server on this same broadcast domain?

i would suggest to add a DHCP reservation for this MAC address on your router DHCP server just to be on the safe side.  It's strange there is no IP assigned - I would expect to see the DHCP client does pick up the default IP instead.

  • can you walk a novice thru how you accomplished this? I am not sure the steps, when I cannot connect to the switch.

    Thank you schumaku

The DHCP client on the GS308E does "query" the network for an IP address for some seconds only, after that it does fall back to the default LAN IP address.

To make the DHCP succeed, the switch must be connected to the LAN port of your router, where typically the DHCP service for the LAN is located. Said this, the switch needs (while connected to the LAN) a cold restart, unplug the DC power plug, and replug to the switch.

Why ever, the GS308E does not come with any (actual) discovery option anymore. There is no other way than checking the router for the "connected devices"where the DHCP assigned IP address will become visible. The designation varies widely between todays many more or less decent routers  or cable modem-routers.

Here on my Swisscom router, it's with the "Expert Mode Settings" enabled, under "Manage network settings" -> "Assign static IP addresses automatically"

      ---

Your Internet-Box can always assign the same static IP address to the devices selected by you. This is particularly useful for servers that always have to be accessed with the same address in the home network.

      ---

No idea why ISP and router makers try to reinvent magic and imagination instead of sticking with the industry standard designations...

Yes, it's extremely difficult to find (without trial-and-error) the GS308E in that list, look here - it's identified as Device-28 why ever:
