All your customers and probably all IT consultants own Android and iOS based mobile phones and many more toys which registers in several ways to many known and unknown players. In fact, this does never stop! Depending where you life or where you travel to, you get even free apps forced added.
Here for a tiny switch, the few people make big noise about a one-off registration - in comparison to the above it's ridiculous. In exchange, you get limited lifetime warranty (EoS + three years) instead of just the legally required minimum (US twelve months, EU six months, or can you proof that a problem existed as the device was new to get 24 months)?
And why exactly please? I understand it might be a problem if you are living on a space station or an Antarctica research station and face a chicken-and-egg problem...

The switch was running firwmare "Software Version 7.0.1.20", updated to 7.0.4.8 and a checkbox "Don't remind me again" has appeared, I don't understand why was not there in first place....bad design?
As for the rest of my opinion and your comments, I confirm that this is my last Netgear product I'll ever buy, and looking other comments, I'm not the only one, probably few..OK, good luck Netgear.

Oversight or whatever - I'm not Netgear, but not shy to push them. Devices can be on the shelves for a shorter or longer time, so firmware can be outdated on customer delivery. it's also not uncommon that some early firmware is installed during the manufacturing process to keep availability up in the market. Welcome to the wonderful world of agile development processes. The control was added based on customer feedback (count in my feedback and complaint, too).
I don't understand why people are installing devices without pushing current firmware - especially in today's security critical world.

It's not a secret, there were certain issues on the early remote/cloud manageable switch implementation - of course this caused some unhappy customers.
Other customers desperately wanted an off-line registration, because they don't want to expose the switch (there is no need to provide Internet access to the switches) which is available now.
Others are still stating they don't want be forced to use Insight - what's pure optional and opt-in only. Mostly fake news.
You don't intend to provide an answer to my question - conclude, for no obvious reason. Take care of your tin hat!
