Vlan compatibility with Cisco

Hi,

We just purchased 10 x new Netgear switches (All M4100) to add to an existing Cisco infrastructure.

Fairly simple setup with only 6 Valns.

5: Admin, 30: VOIP, 101 : Management, 100: One set of workstaions, 102 : Second set of workstaions, 200: IPTV, 400: Internet, 401 : Wireless Management

All I wanted to achieve was: 2 last ports on every netgear switch= T and has all Vlans. I have Untagged all relevant ports if I want to use them in the appropriate vlan

Vlan 101 is my Managementt Vlan. (Had to configure inter vlan routing to make that work)

I have only turned on three switches so far and all three are not working. They work for a while and than send packets but are not receiving any.

What am I doing wrong?

Do I have to get rid of the original vlan1 on the netgear?

Is there anything I need to config in the STP to make these switches compatible with Cisco (300 and 400 series).

I am using an optical backbone on Cisco and Netgear switches.

Kindest Regards,

Olaf

  • Hi DaneA,

    Thanks for reaching out.

    We got this working.

Step 1: Upgrade to the latest firmware.

    Step 2: Forget the GUI.

We had some issues relating to old firmware - causing the trunk links to have some incompatibility with how they tag and untag frames between Cisco and Netgear.

After upgrading the firmware we had access to 'switchport mode access' and 'switchport mode trunk' commands fixing the access port and trunking issues.

    Thanks Sir,

    Olaf
