XS728T does not connect to PC through ethernet cable

We just got a few new netgear XS728T and XS748T switches for replacing some older 1G ethernet switches. In general, the hardware installation went through without clitches. The activitity leds lights up as we connect cables back to the original systems.

However, when we try to connect a pc(my laptop) to this switch directly through a known good cable, there is no LED lights up on the connected port on switch side or on my PC ethernet port. We also tried on the port that were known good(unplugged from a live server connection). The latest tool("NETGEAR Switch Discovery Tool 1.2.103.exe") from Netgear website were used to discover the switch. Of course, it will not work unless the LEDs are lighting up first(That's physics?).  I put this statement here because we had used the same setup(cable, software, PC etc) on another older version of netgear 24 ports switch, it does find the switch and get us into admin page as expected. The only thing that doesn't get proven working is this switch(XS728T in particular).

Hope someone with a bit more experience can help us by directing us to the path of resolution. We had a few more switches to be installed in next few days and potentially quite bit of build up after this initial phase. If this proves to be a persistent problem, we may have to steerr away and maybe choose different product set.

Thanks

    jduan318,

    Welcome to the community!

Does this behavior only happen on one XS728T or on multiple switches?

You could try doing the following such as:

    • Performing a Factory Defaults and/or reboot
    • Performing a loopback test by connecting two ends of the Ethernet cable on the same switch (ex. port 1 to port 10 on the same switch)

If the port LEDs are still not lighting up, then most likely it's a defective switch and if it's a recent purchase, you may contact the reseller to have it replaced.

Should your cabling (to the PC in question) bot allow GbE, eg. because of not all four pairs are workable, or the PC does not have a GbE capable adapter - these switches don't support 10M/100M Ethernet/Fast Ethernet links, only 1G and 10G.
