GS108X Rack Mounting?

Is it possible to get OEM rack mounting ears for the GS108X?

There seems to be screw holes but I can’t find brackets anywhere. I’m not interested in the 3D printed stuff.

Thanks

Phil

  • I sent an email to customer support and unfortunately got no reply. I solved this with different sized brackets for left and right. Unit is off-centre but fits ok.

PhyinLan 4.25” (“Large”) on one side and 5.63” (“Extra Large”) on the other. Not cheap but done. Fits great.

Now, the SFP+ cable I have is only running at 1Gb. The instructions show there is a compatible 10Gb cable….mmm.

Challenge the Netgear customer support for the rack mount kit to a GS108X/GS110MX/GS110EMX (within 1 mm the same width!) to customer.support@netgear.com

  • That might be a good alternative. I’ll try that and let you know how it goes get on.

This is how the GS110EMX looked like with the rack mount "ears":

There are no 10Gb "cables" per se. Are you referring to an SFP+ DAC, a "direct attach cable"? Due to a difference in the  encoding, connecting to 1Gb-only SFP port is not possible, due to different possible data rates:

    • SFP does support only 155M/622M/ 1.25G/2.5G/3G/4.25G data rates, as per SFF-8472.
    • SFP+ does support only 6G/8.5G/10G data rates only as per SFF-8431.

According the GS108X data sheet, the most common module types are supported - except of the 10G Copper SFP+ Transceiver (Netgear AXM765 and AXM765v2)

As usual, Netgear can provide support for their own modules only (kinda industry standard way).

What I find confusing - considering this is a switch clearly intended for "everyone":

    ---

    Highlights

    Longer Distance Connections

    • The 10G SFP+ uplink offers the capacity to maintain high-speed connections over 100 meters (328 feet).

1 Cat6A or higher cables required for 10 Gbps speed.

    ---

An SFP and SFP+ slot does provide limited power only, -not- allowing to design 10 Gb Copper Transceivers supporting the full 100 meters PHY link length. There are to major chipset versions, the older (~35 meters, now often sold at a lower price), and the newer ones (~85 meters). One day, some chipset maker might come up with something "magic", but extreme unlikely, as there are physical limits.

The AGM735 (legacy variant, RJ45 @35 meters max) and the AGM735v2 (AGM735-10000S, RJ45 @85 meter max) aren't listed - these would allow me to believe and trust in the data sheets. As is, it's *****. Iphie_C IphieChen  please - your business, thank you for clarifying, initiate additional testing on AGM735v2, and last but not least correcting the data sheet!

And then, the Netgear branded "original" modules are priced ways out of reach for most consumers investing into an unmanaged switches like the GS108X, or even Smart Managed ones LaurentMa - understand support and warranty must be backed by some percentage of the price. Says a customer of the big C company, where we get high discounts of up to nn% on these extraordinary high list prices.

Back to Bluhawk the OP on this thread:

Tell us more about the SFP+ cable you try to operate (make, model, details, .... probably an "active" DAC model, apparently working on 1Gb only?

Sorry for the lengthy reply, hope it's useful for you and future readers.

    Regards,

    -Kurt.

PS. Keep in mind, I'm just yet another community member, neither employed by, nor compensated by Netgear. I was also never involved in the GS108X Beta testing - would never had agreed on that data sheet DS-GS108X-20Oct23 and its content.

  • The old cable was an SFP+ DAC. I’ve swapped it for a Nergear AXC761 from eBay and now connects 10Gb. Sorted. Too many variables to work through specs and compatibility to work out the reason.
