GS316 -- Very slow download speeds

Hi All

I bought the Netgear Gs316 to replace a 10+ years old 16ports switch.Before the switch was 100mbps and download was around 90mbps.After i inserted the netgear gs316 the download is capped at 21 mbps.There were no other network modifcations.This is a public institution.I am from Romania.Before the netgear i had briefly a 8 port new cisco Cisco SF110D-08-EU put in place until the netgear arrived.This one worked fine with the dlink.I got 90mbps download.

I am out of ideas.

5 Clients (100mbps and 1gbit links) ---- > Netgear gs316 ----> Dlink Gs-1016d ----> Fortinet router (ISP router) -----> media converter (optical fiber)

Download is around 21 mbps

Upload is 50 mbps

Thank you

  • Update: I just realized that the entire network of the institution is capped at 20 mbps download and 50 mb upload.The isp said that from their side everything is ok....
    Can adding a switch create a download limit like this on the network ?

      it usually doesn't limit to 20/50mbps. If there's an issues, its usually when a cable is sketchy and dropping speeds from gigabit to 10/100mbps connections.

      I'd start at the basics and disconnect everything from the router and then add pieces in 1 at a time. Test the speeds each time you add something. Then, when you do find what device is causing issues, try swapping ethernet cords around since I've seen ethernet cords be sketchy.

      The GS316 is an unmanaged switch so they usually either work or don't work. there isn't anything inspecting traffic. They only time I see a switch like this causing slow downs is again the dropping from gigabit to 10/100mbps.

        I plugged the ISP router directly to a laptop and made speedtest and all servers i tried are capped at 21 mbps.I called the ISP and they will send a team on monday to check.
