MS105 halving download speeds

Hi everyone,

I'm posting this under Nighthawk Gaming Switches because there doesn't appear to be a general switches board. Also I'm used to lurking on boards like this looking for answers so this is the first time I'm posting a question. Our small business recently upgraded to 2GB fiber, meaning some of our network equipment needed upgraded from 1GBe to 2.5GBe to take advantage, and I thought the MS105 would be a good fit. When I connect directly to the ISP-provided router (Calix brand), I get the full download speeds using SpeedTest.net (upload speed matches). However, when I install this switch and then connect to it, I get essentially half the download speed and yet the upload speed is unchanged.

Downstream from the MS105 I also have an older Netgear 24 port gigabit switch. The problem replicates itself when I connect there, but instead of half of 2GB, its half of 1GB.

I'm using a UGreen USB-C 2.5GBe adapter with my Surface Laptop when testing the 2.5GBe and then using the Surface dock for the 1GBe tests. Seems unlikely that the adapter is to blame, but I'm curious if there is something I'm missing.

I haven't really tackled any major networking projects for 10 years, so I feel like all of this newer stuff is past me. Any insight is helpful. Explain it to me like I'm five if you can (lol). And let me know if you need additional details.

Thanks!

So if you disconnect the older 24 port switch from the MS switch and just test with a ethernet connected device at the MS switch, speeds are still not good?

Try a different ethernet connected PC to compare results.

What CAT# LAN cable are you using between the ISP router and the MS switch? CAT6A STP would be suggested to try.

Thanks for the reply. Essentially the answer to your first question is yes. In order to isolate the MS unit, I did just test it directly connected to the ISP router, and then jump from it to my computer. I'm using brand new 6' CAT6 patch cables by Cable Matters ordered from Amazon. They are rated for 10GBe. Speeds with this setup are 500-900MB on the download but 1700-1900MB on the upload.

Note that if I connect directly to the ISP router with the same cables, I'm getting 1900MB up and down.

Most everyone in the office has Surface laptops now, so while I can technically use a different computer, I would still be using the same USB C adapter. I'll see if I can think of a different solution for that though.

Is it possible this MS105 is defective?

Possible. Would need to try another one or something else with same specs to check that.
