Need the proper switch for my IPTV setup

I have the current setup:

- I connect to my ISP via fiber optic cable and a provided router

- For IPTV a VLAN is created by the router and assigned to a single port (LAN4)

- Lan 4 is connected to a FS105 switch

- Two STBs are directly connected to switch

This setup works perfectly

- Add a third STB connected to the switch via a POWERLINE solution (TP-LINK)

The powerline shows continuous activity and playback on the STB's stutters or freezes

TP-LINK states that the switch continuously sending data to the POWERLINE and thereby using up bandwidth

A user on the TP-LINK forum suggested that the setup would not work if the switch did not support MULTICAST and IGMP Snooping

Question 1) Does this sound correct that MULTICAST/IGMP are required to get this setup working?

Question 2) If so then which NETGEAR switch would be recommended to replace the FS105?

  • Hi All! Just to let you know I replaced the POWERLINE kit with one from a different brand and it is working perfectly.

    Hi bouldersdos,

    Welcome to the community! :)

Based from what you have mentioned, everything works fine with the two STBs directly connected to the FS105 switch.  To isolate the problem,  try to connect the 3rd STB directly to the FS105 switch, then check if  the playback will also stutter or freeze.  In this way, we could isolate the problem.  Let us know the result.

Also, I believe that there is only a certain distance that a powerline adapter connection could cover.  What is the distance of the powerline adapter connected to the FS105 switch from the powerline adapter connected to the 3rd STB?  Another thing to be checked is that, is the powerline adapter connected to the FS105 switch and the powerline adapter connected to the 3rd STB are both within the same circuit breaker?

I look forward to your response.

    Regards,

      Hi DaneA!

Thank you for the warm welcome.

      Here is some additional information:

      - All three STBs directly wired into the switch works perfectly even with all three on HD channels

      - STB 3 connected to the router directly via the POWERLINK works perfectly

      - STB 3 connected to the switch i the POWERLINK works perefctly

      Now here come the problems:

      - Conect STB 1 to the switch directly and STB 3 via the POWERLINEto te switch Playback wll sutter and freeze on both STBs

      - Turn off STB 3 but do not unplug it to the switch. STB 1 can not playback HD but can plaback non HD with some stuttering.

Conclusion: There is constant traffic between the switch and the powerline even with the STB turned off. This is confirmed by the blinking led on the POWERSWITCH. This trafic is eating up the bandwidth.

So my question is who is causing this? The POWERLINE, the SWITCH, combination of both?

      Thank you for your help!
